Miyamoto: America Better At "Creating Unique Products"
Posted By: Brian Leahy - Monday, May 12, 2008 10:50 AM

While gaming legend Hideo Kojima believes that Americans don't understand the Japanese way of being humble another gaming legend is praising America.

Shigeru Miyamoto, in an interview with Wired, said that, "America has always been better at creating unique products" referring to indie developers and upcoming opportunities with WiiWare as a platform.

He also believes that US indie devs have "let their own personality and their own kind of unique interests really flourish."

Now excuse us while we go play Everyday Shooter (recently released for the PC, on Steam).

He might be right, but America is also responsible for EA.

I agree American developers have let their personality and interests come through better, but I don't know if I'd call their products more unique. Shooters all feel the same, even the highly touted ones. Our platformers can't even remotely compete with just Miyamoto's games, much less someone else. Strategy games haven't changed since the mid-90s in any important way. The only area I see American (and more generally Western) games getting more unique is in the RPG realm. Where JRPGs are the same as they were in the 80s but with better graphics, Western RPGs are making a huge name for themselves by standing out. Oblivion gave you an open world and made the story more important than characters. Mass Effect is cinematic in a way no other game compares to.

But Miyamoto is only a half step from being a god to me, so I'll believe anything he says.

It kinda made me chuckle when I read this considering Nintendo relies so much on its first party franchises.

@jargy1

I think the reason you don't see a lot of "out of box" thinking on games is because the large houses are afraid to take the risk. Then someone comes along, takes that risk, see it works...bang, formula for another 80+ knock off games.

In the end I say everyone is human. Your great or not great no matter where your from. Unless your french...then your boned no matter what :D.

hehe I kid I kid. But seriously, Why pin people to regional stereotypes, its ridiculous.

What America needs to be better at and a living example of is EDUCATION,SCIENCE,MATH,PHYSICA L FITNESS,EATING RIGHT,and LIVING RIGHT and these are the only things that really,really matter at the end of the day,you feel me?

I'm not saying America makes bad games. I just don't think they make particularly unique games. And it's not just restricted to gaming either. Hollywood has been on a long kick of taking a success story and rehashing the crap out of it. Even with books it happens. After the Da Vinci Code came out and was a huge success (which just proves that you can make a ton of money by aiming for stupid people) there were about 88 million different "Code" books or "Secret" books or whatever that all were just a new story based on some biblical junk.

Japan is not immune to copy-cats otherwise JRPGs would have come a long way since the 80s, but they don't pump out the exact same game time and time again and rely on success (I'm looking at you Halo series). They continue to innovate and change in enough ways to keep the experience fresh (now I'm looking at you Mario). I hope my point isn't getting lost in the details.

@jargy

that's a good point, I think I can agree...

I think Japanese game makers come up with better and more unique ideas, although they might not turn out to be the best games.

That's certainly true. I've seen a lot of games that had a great concept, but didn't have what it takes to really come together.

I can only speak for myself when I say "Thank you Mr. Miyamoto for having the guts to say what you just said!" However, I honestly find myself torn between shouting "U-S-A! U-S-A!
U-S-A!" and reminding myself that a unique vision (I'm looking at you LostWinds) is easily outweighed by an enduring and maturing one (I shift my gaze to The Legend of Zelda and its hero, Link)... Which is not to say a videogame cannot be both... I merely do not see it happening on WiiWare at launch (although similar words could have been said about Geometry Wars on XBLA; I'm no X-bot, I'm just putting that out there, and trying to grasp for straws).
