Motorola's Droid RAZR HD comes with a 4.7-inch HD display, an improved design and 24 hours of battery life. Matt Mira and Candace Bailey find out how this new smartphone lives up to the Droid line.

What You need To Know

  • The Droid RAZR HD features a pretty big difference in the usual Droid RAZR design where the whole bezel is aluminum, like the iPhone.
  • The corners have been rounded, much like we saw with the Atrix HD.
  • The simple, modern design also comes with a Kevlar back and hard buttons that feel pretty good.
  • The 4.7-inch super AMOLED HD screen has a 1280x720 resolution.
  • The color saturation was on par with every other AMOLED screen we've seen.
  • The specs are pretty similar to a lot of Android phones out right now, so we weren't blown away.
  • We really liked what Motorola did with the RAZR and its edge-to-edge screen but this phone would be a lot smaller if it had the same.
  • The RAZR HD has the same dual-core processor that's been around for a while, which is certainly fast enough for this phone.
  • Everything felt smooth and snappy, a lot of which is due to Motorola holding back with their Android skin.
  • This phone runs Android 4.0.5 and you're going to have to wait if you want Jelly Bean.
  • The 8 megapixel camera gave us not-so-great photos.
  • The pictures were high res but did not produce good detail; photos were often grainy.
  • Like any camera of this quality, photos are decent with great lighting.
  • Other than that, pictures look like they were taken by a phone camera.
  • The 1080p video quality was similar to the photos.

Price

  • $199 with a contract.

Rating

  • 4 Seals of Approval out of 5. (How do we rate gadgets?)
  • This is a solid phone and we like the direction that Motorola is taking with the phone design.
  • The screen is great and the performance is top notch.
  • We just wish the camera was better.
