The Olympus OM-D E-M5 micro four thirds digital camera comes with a 16 megapixel sensor, 1080p video recording and a 3" OLED touch display packed in a stylish retro design for $1,000. Matt Mira and John Barrowman go hands on with the camera for its Gadget Pr0n rating.
What You Need To Know
- The Olympus OM-D E-M5 is a tasteful update to their OM line.
- The design is great and we really like the feel and positioning of the buttons.
- They kept the large dials up on the top that the original OM had.
- The camera also comes with a removable flash, which is not the easiest thing to keep taking on and off, due to a lot of covers (four, to be exact, and they are incredibly easy to lose).
- There is also an electronic view finder with an adjustable screen.
- On the side is an HDMI out and AV cables.
- The OLDE screen is great: it pops out and you can tilt it to pretty much any angle you would need.
- The body on the digital camera is metal and sealed, which means you can take this thing outside.
- The Om-D is meant to compete with DSLRs, which means the pictures are very, very good.
- This has a 16.1 megapixel sensor and can shoot at a number of different ISO stops from 200 all the way to 25,600.
- The color saturation is good.
- We thought the camera performed well indoors and macro shots were easy to use.
- This camera hs a number of settings but if you're new to shooting, you may want to stick to Auto.
- This camera is very versatile and shooting modes can be customized with every conceivable setting.
- This is a great way to learn more about photography.
- The video quality was solid but nowhere near as the quality of DSLRs.
- In a well light situation, the video is crisp and colors bright.
- We can’t really say the same about low light but that's typical for a consumer level camera.
- If you're a serious shooter, you should look at a camera like the Sony NEX-7 or the Canon DSLRs that we love.

Rating
- 4 Seals of Approval out of 5. (How do we rate gadgets?)
- This is a very powerful camera for its size and the fastest mirror-less camera we have tested.
- Images look very good.
- The design and durability of the body really make this camera something to consider.
- The price is really holding it back from being a 5.
