MSI GT70 Gaming Laptop Review

The MSI GT70 gaming laptop allows anyone to game on the go with Intel's latest core i7 processor, NVIDIA GT 670 GPU and THX certified speakers. Matt Mira and Chris Hardwick review the notebook that starts at $1,500.

What You Need To Know

  • The GT70 gaming laptop from MSI is a beast at 8.6 lbs.
  • Visually, it looks less aggressive than previous MSI laptops we've reviewed on the show.
  • The brushed aluminum is a really nice touch.
  • The two speakers and down-firing sub put out plenty of sound.
  • There's also a 17.3" display, which is a pretty good size for gaming.
  • The resolution of 1920x1080 doesn't seem like a lot in the age of Retina Displays but it still looked good.
  • The viewing angle is a problem.
  • The screen has a matte finish so there's no glare, but it really comes down to color temperature and saturation, which really changes when you tilt the screen forward and back.
  • There are plenty of ports for peripherals: 5 USB ports, including 3 USB 3.0, GB Ethernet, VGA, HDMI and eSATA.
  • The GT70 configuration that we tested comes with a 2.7 GHz Intel i7 processor and 16 GB of RAM, plus 2 64GB SSDS conveniently configured in Raid 0--all of which is just for the OS and applications.
  • There's also a 750GB moving hard drive to store all your files.
  • This configuration makes for faster load times and a boot time of only 26 seconds.
  • That seems long compared to the 8 second boot time of the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook but this computer actually does stuff when it's not online.
  • This gaming laptop also has the 3 GB NVIDIA GeForce 670M GPU.
  • While this isn't the very best machine ever at gaming, it's still very good.
  • Games like Battlefield 3 will operate around the 33-35 FPS rate.
  • It can handle Diablo 3 with ease.
  • One thing we like about MSI is that they do not include a ton of bloatware, so you are ready to start gaming.
  • You can expect a little over 4 hours of battery life when gaming for a while straight through.

  • $2,000

  • 4 Seals of Approval out of 5. (How do we rate gadgets?)
  • This MSI GT70 laptop is an excellent choice for gamers.
  • There is plenty of power and the incorporation of solid state and moving hard drives is a great way to increase the computer's power.
  • 8.6 lbs is a lot for any portable system.
  • It's not the best looking machine in the world and we wish the display had better viewing angles.
