I use Fighter as main pawn, magic ranger myself, mage and warrior. We can kill pretty much everything, big mobs of course are a challenge which they SHOULD be. If they are not challenge for you then you are way over leveled and prolly no point for you to play any longer. But yeah game is very fun. I have a guide so it helps to not do mistakes like giving a vendor anything less than a gold idol. Also carrot exploit hlped me to start the game well, since all the board quests are pretty much grind which I hate. Love all the story quests of course.
On the Golden/Silver Idol quests... (important shopkeep upgrade quests)The Golden Idol is a reward given by Symone after finishing the quest "Escort Duty" at Fournival's Manor (in Gran Soren). The prequisite quests are "Land of Opportunity" and "Chasing Shadows" (both in Gran Soren) The Silver Idol is a reward for the quest "Put an Eye Out" off the notice board in Gran Soren. (You kill a Cyclops underneath the Shadow Fort) Go down the hole. You will be able to do the Idol quests for Claxton and Medeline after you complete the Griffin quest at the Bluemoon Tower. Both of these quests are IMPORTANT if you want good gear as early as possible. If you forge the Golden Idol at the Black Cat you can keep the fake one and it gives you a 30% discount with shopkeepers.
On Quests.... First complete the Hydra quest to get to Gran Soren. Second complete the Mines quest, clearing out the mines near Gran Soren. (This will link two parts of the map together, open trade giving you acsess to better gear and give you a place to mine for materials). Third complete the Notice Board quests that reward 50,000 gold: like killing snakes, rabbits etc..(after a few of those you'll have enough money to buy from the mines merchant). >Resting at an Inn will respawn animals and most small monsters< On Classes and Discipline Points... Remember: Only Mages can heal... (Sorc. cannot) Focus on one class at a time untill you've maxed the rank (it will open up all the skills and you can switch back to a maxed class when you need to) The best ways I've found to earn Discipline Points are.. Killing large Beasts, Fighting away from the road at night.. and of course Quests. (dont underestimate fighting at night). Use skills that move or knock enemies down (it will change battles) If your facing a Large Beast.. Climb it! You'll finish the fight alot faster. On Storage and Items... Put everything in storage besides... Curatives, a Lantern and Oil. Combine the items you have in storage (you are probly holding some useful stuff) Harspud Juice + Large Nut = Balmy Perfume Harspud Sauce + Large Nut = Balmy Incense Etc.. (These are important because you cant make your pawns drink health potions and Balmys heal your entire party. Eventually your pawns will be at half health, perma damage, and these will make the difference) Random... Turn off Pawn subtitles, they just crowd the screen. Cheers
Another helpful tip: the sorcerer is one of the most fun classes, but it's also one of the hardest to play as, especially if you aren't an experienced Role-Playing gamer. The mage is probably the hardest since you will need to focus on support for your party if their isn't another mage in the party.I was a mage for a few hours, and then I switched to being a sorcerer the second I got to Gran Soren. If others are thinking about doing the same, I suggest that you make sure you have enough money for sorcerer equipment or you will end up having to run all over the city looking for loot to sell in order to buy an archstave, like me.
Actually, having a ranger in your party can be extremely helpful sometimes. My main pawn is a ranger and depending you have the right skills equipped along with the right equipment, they can one shot a lot of the weaker enemies with a longbow while you focus on the bigger guys. A better party make up would be a fighter, warrior, ranger, and a mage. Its kind of like MMO logic. The fighter (or mystic knight) along with the warrior can tank while the ranger attacks from a far. Meanwhile the mage will support the party with buffs and heals when nesscesary. If you choose your skills and pawns carefully, this combo can never go wrong.
Thanks Leah, truly smart and helpful tips.

Dragon's Dogma is (in my opinion) even harder than Dark Souls. It lulls you into a false sense of security, then beats your ass down before you know what happened. It doesn't help that my pawns keep dying on me.
I find that having a strider pawn is very helpful in a lot of situations. Mine gets more kills than I do it seems. I'm a fighter at the moment, and have opted to have a strider, mage, and fighter combo. It seems to work out better that way. Your point about not upgrading your weapons is very dangerous for players, as that extra damage done can win the battles that will net you more experience and gold for further weapons and upgrades. Even if you turn around and sell it later you should get the best weapons and armor you can find and upgrade them as far as you can. You might have to grind up some gold, but the safety of it is worth it.
