I just wrote a long of long paragraphs in replies to other comments of a similar nature, that people probably wont even read.

For everyone that states Mass Effect is a generic shooter that won because of the popularity of generic shooters. Correct and wrong

Mass Effect is somewhat of a generic shooter but it did not win because of that. The reason Mass Effect won was because of its story. Its story was popular enough that millions played the same 20 hour campaign over and over and over, with only minor differences such as " i wanted to change who i romanced, and who i let die" losing hundreds of ours of their lives to that one game, and there is not a lot of single player games that can brag of having achieved such a feat. Mass Effect is also one of the few single player games out that when the series finally ended, a fundraiser made over 50 thousand dollars just to change the ending, which the endings were quite wonderful, just when they brag about how your choices effect the ending and they dont, it hurts people. people were left distraught, and angry when what was promised was not delivered. had Bioware never made that claim Mass Effects endings only complaint would probably be people just wanting more closure as to what happens after.

Now i know this vote was just for mass effect one, but seriously, people wont just look at one game in the series if they know the rest of the series as well.

I voted for the story i liked more, not the game that plays better. these "fanboys" are fans because they like mass effects story. Mass effect became "main stream" because of its story, they liked it because it brought out characters and a universe you could actually grow to care about in the end.
