Blair Herter and the Feedback crew discuss used game sales. Publishers would have you believe used game sales are hurting the industry, but retailers like GameStop disagree. Where do you stand on the issue?

    I understand people like used games. I like used games as well. The problem I think is not used games. It is gamestops seven day return policy that is hurting the industry. I have bought (rented) used games from them for a week and took them back for a full refund before. With millions of gamers doing this to play through a game it will hurt the industry. Everyone wants to badmouth publishers and developers for being greedy. This is how they make a living. I don t know about you but I do not work for free. They do not work for free either. It costs a lot of money to make games. It seems like a lot of studios have went under during this generation of consoles. I wonder how much sales they lost due to used games. I just don t want to find out that during the next consoles lifespan. That we loose even more of our gaming variety. We just might only see call of duty, halo, assassin s creed, elder scrolls ,and small downloadable games. I guess madden will be there also to but who cares.

    Half of us cant even afford a $60 game and like hell their parent arent going to spend $120 for two new games. I buy Used games because there not reason for me to spend so much on a new game that i probably wont like so aether wait for the price to drop or get it Used aka cheaper price. If there a game i like I'll preorder it, other games not so much, i like them but not worth spending $60. they should go back to the ol' days were games were 40 to 50 dollars, I bet when the 'Next Gen' console comes out they are going to raise the game price. I'm going to keep buying Used games, make better games and stop making taking out things to sell it as DLC which i dont but again its not worth my money

    How can a company lose money when they never possessed it in the first place???
    Whats killing the video game industry is bad customer relationship , bad service , and flawed products.

    Maybe this is yet another way the customers are trying to communicate their dissatisfaction with how they are treated by some of these companies??

    Who are used games hurting? Gee let me guess, umm greedy publishers, manufactures, designers, and the like. They look at used game sales and think that should be our money. How do we get copyright laws to help us monopolize our product. That is what is happening. I will say this if i cant buy used on the next ps system I won't buy one. I've own every ps system ever released, several cause they usually break. Now you can't mod your system or you goto jail. So yeah, I will be buying a new computer if ps or Xbox have any sort of restricted game use. And so should you these companies are bankrupt if you don't buy their products. The people can control the corporations if we stick together.

    If it weren't for used games, I would never have been able to play any games at all as a kid. My parents might have bought a couple of games for me as a kid, but I could never afford anything but used games. The industry seems to have made it just fine with used games being sold all over all these years. Maybe if they stop sinking so much cash into newer systems and more into better games then they might be doing better.

    How to save Single Player games:
    Episodic content: Make at least 2-3 hour downloadable monthly content. If no one really likes it they didn't really invest that much money or time into it and can just go onto another project. If it does do well its cheap and digital download so no one can sell it back used.

    I remember in the early 90's used CD's were going to be the "death" of the music industry... Turns out it wasn't used CD's that decimated CD sales, but DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION (Napster, iTunes, Pandora etc.) Think about it Game Publishers.

    Remember the good ol' days when you got a game before online was around and they couldn't fix bugs so they couldn't half ass a game during development and get you to buy expansions for it? I miss those days.

    I agree with Steve Johnson on this Feedback almost completely. I feel that developers are sort of scaring gamers into buying their games new rather than giving them a really good reason to. Especially when the online for that game sucks or isn't the reason why you bought the game to begin with. If they REALLY need to make more money, give the gamers a deal they can get behind: give them multiple pieces of dlc for free if they buy the game new. For example, when you buy a certain game new, you get a pass, which ISN'T needed for online or restricting gameplay, but rather like a season pass that Gears 3 has for the map packs and such. So when you buy the game new, you will get some dlc at no extra cost, and I am not talking about day-one DLC because that is the most a-hole move from game developers ever. So therefore, you can't buy the pass seperately if you get a new game, so you NEED that new game to get those dlc for free, but at the same time, you can buy that dlc if you bought used. I get that game developers thrive on dlc as a way to extend their products life span, but think about it like this. Would you rather have DLC here and there which people may or may not buy from you that is priced around at $10~15 depending on the game. ORRrrrr, give the option of free upcoming DLC with a new game which gives you around $60 (given that you take out the money for production, licensing at stores, etc.) and makes people want to buy your game new rather than buy used?

    I know that the used game issue doesn't have a concrete solution yet and it quite possibly never will. I mean, ever since online gameplay has become available, it has become an issue. Even my idea is flawed but I feel that if you want people to buy your games new and not used, then you need to entice the consumers to buy it new, give them a positive reason, don't restrict the gamers from your games, even when it is used because that not only sends negative feedback to the developers side because they start to look more like money hungry people than people who are passionate about what they are creating for people to enjoy.

    P.S. If you do day one DLC, don't make people pay for it. It should be free, I didn't even get Mass Effect 3 and was blown away that they thought that was okay for people. Whether it helped the game or not, you know it was ready to go and be sent to everyone.

    It's downright offensive to me the way publishers/developers are acting about used games, and the bull$#!% multiplayer pass codes. What was wrong with the old days? When i could buy an FPS say Halo or Halo 2 for instance (or even buy it USED) and get the whole F'ing game, multiplayer, campain, all of it.

    Now i'm being threatened with MP passcodes, banning of used games and having to go to digital DL? ALL because the Devs want to pad (depending on wether your a programmer, designer, artist, audio, etc) that cool $60k - $85k grand they make a year?? I make far far less then that and i'm comptia certified, but i still work. I'm pretty sure i have the right to buy a used game for the sake of saving money now and again, so sorry you won't be able to make the extra porche payment off of me every single time. I'm a 50/50 gamer, sometimes i buy new, sometimes used. Get over the greed.

    It would save everyone a lot of trouble if Gamestop just agreed not to sell a used copy of a game until it is say three weeks old. Those first very important weeks for a games sales are then protected, customers who dislike the game still get to sell it back, everyone is happy.

    There are two things that I think is continuously not talked about when it comes to digital distribution:

    Download times, yes with faster internet it works well- but still anything I download I have to leave my ps3 on for about fifteen minutes to an hour for just a demo. Extrapolate that into a full game and we are talking almost a half day to a full day to download.

    Also the encroaching metered internet is going to wind up being a huge blow for the media industries (not the distributer of the goods) but the people who actually make the product will experience lagging sales due to fears of overage on the internet cap. This is why I see physical media as a necessity, not to mention the possibility of a company folding rendering your game useless and unplayable.

    I see multi terabyte hard drives in PS4/Xbox 720 and buying game cases from Gamestop that are nothing but a piece of paper with a code on it that you use to download the game.

    Interesting topic to bring up. I don't believe that used games hurt the gaming industry. If used CD's, DVD movies & books aren't issue in their perspective industry, why gaming companies making an big issue out of it? Buying a used game is good (as long it doesn't have online pass). I recently just brought Gears Of War 3 ($19.99) at Blockbuster & that's a steal. In Mass Effect 3, you don't have to play multiplayer mode in order to get the "best" ending, Nikole. As for single player & multiplayer modes should be available separately in the future, its 50/50 split for me. Why? The good thing is that players can focus on single player mode without be forced to play online multiplayer mode (versus). Plus, it'll be optional if that day comes to fruition. Bad part is that players will end up paying more, if they want to buy the modes.

    Yes, when you rent a game from gamefly you have to purchase the online pass. However, when you purchase a game, they ship you the case, manual and the online pass.
