HP Envy 14 Spectre Notebook Review

The HP Envy 14 Spectre notebook features a lightweight design, Beat audio, an HP Radiance Backlit keyboard and more. Find out how many Seals of Approval Kevin Pereira and Matt Mira rate this device on Gadget Pr0n.

What You Need To Know

  • The HP Envy 14 Spectre notebook has a gorgeous design.
  • The lid and LCD are all made from Gorilla Glass.
  • The entire palm rest and trackpad are almost made of glass.
  • The notebook measures 0.79" thick and weighs just less than 4 lbs, which mostly comes from the glass.
  • The trackpad is one of the better ones we've used on a Windows PC and the backlit keyboard is really nice.
  • Each key has an individual LED.
  • There is no lack of ports on this notebook: there's a mini display port, HDMI, USB 3.0, USB 2.0, an SD card slot and a headphone with beats audio built in.
  • There's also a full Ethernet port which is great because there's no dongle to lose.
  • Our one complaint is that the power adapter plugs itno the right side while everything else is on the left.
  • The speakers are located right at the front of the chassis, which means it's closer to the user.
  • We compared the audio to a 15" MacBook Pro and the HP Envy wiped the floor with it.
  • Beats is also well integrated with a dedicated button on the right that brings up your audio settings where you can easily adjust the equalizer.
  • There's also a jog wheel for the volume, but we think this could have been more responsive.
  • The 14" display has a 1600x900 resolution and the LCD itself is almost edge to edge.
  • The screen was very bright and the colors really pop.
  • Video also looks great.
  • One note is that the LCD matrix is quite visible on the screen, which is something you don’t see on a laptop like the MacBook Air but we give this a little bit of a pass because everything else about the screen is fantastic.
  • This notebook has a 1.6 GHz Intel core i5 processor, 4 GB of RAM and a 128 GB solid-state drive.
  • The speed was remarkably fast: it can boot up in less than 25 seconds and wakes up from sleep in about 2 seconds.
  • A huge part of this is because of the solid-state drive, which is pretty standard in most ultrabooks.
  • Completing every day tasks felt very snappy and cuts through 1080p video like butter.
  • We also like that HP didn't load a bunch of software on it that we would never use.
  • The battery life is solid: we used the laptop for about 3 hours straight with a full charge to start and were left with 30% afterwards.
  • HP says the Envy can provide up to 9.5 hours of battery life.

  • $1,399

  • 4 Seals of Approval out of 5. (How do we rate gadgets?)
  • We love the Gorilla Glass design.
  • The screen is pretty high-res and brighter than we'd usually expect.
  • The boot times are good and overall, the performance was top notch for this category of notebooks.
  • The only thing holding this back is the high price tag.

My biggest problem with all of the laptops aside from Apple are the battery life. I've never owned a an Apple product but if I were to buy a laptop Apple is the only way for me at this point. If anyone disagrees with me, then please respond give me suggestions because I'm actually in the market for a laptop right now.
