Nikon AW100 CoolPix Digital Camera Review

The Nikon AW100 CoolPix digital camera offers 16 megapixel, a built in GPS, waterproof features and is also shock resistant. Matt Mira joins Kevin Pereira to review the digital camera for its official Seals of Approval.

What You Need To Know

  • The Nikon AW100 CoolPix is rugged and orange, but it's also available in black and blue.
  • The camera itself is very light and weighs only 6.3 ounces.
  • The lens is sealed to prevent moisture.
  • The battery and memory card compartment is sealed with a locking dial, which will make it near impossible to accidentally release it if you're under water.
  • The high resolution 3" display is a lot larger than other rugged point and shoots we've seen from Olympus and Panasonic.
  • The LCD is great with a 430K display.
  • We didn't have any problems seeing it, even under water.
  • The color of the display was very good.
  • The GPS allows for some of the more advanced geo-tagging we've seen.
  • The camera is waterproof to about 10 meters, which may not seem like a lot but if your camera goes into more than 30 feet of water, you probably won't find it anyway.
  • The Nikon is also shock resistant from a rated height of about 1.5 meters.
  • We've dropped this camera a lot and it still works.
  • The AW100 comes with a 16 megapixel CMOS sensor with a variety of menu settings and picture modes.
  • The menu settings aren't as robust as other Nikon point and shoots.
  • The image quality did not suffer.
  • You can turn this camera on and snap the first picture in less than 2 seconds, and the lag between shoots is only about a second.
  • The color reproduction was good.
  • There was a bit of noise from the zoom motor but
  • Sometimes with higher ISO settings, a lot of noise appeared and the images suffered a bit from low lighting.
  • You can also shoot 720p or 1090p video and video image looked really sharp.
  • The color reproduction for video was also good with excellent saturation.
  • There was a bit of noise from the zoom motor but hopefully you won't notice because you'll be doing super extreme things.

  • $289

  • 5 Seals of Approval out of 5. (How do we rate gadgets?)
  • This Nikon is extremely versatile.
  • The image quality is very good for a rugged point and shoot.
