I love the idea that every game shouldn't have the same price. Adam touched on it with the Uncharted multiplayer and the millions-of-weapons thought. I'd rather get what I'm paying for than pay for what I'm getting. Two quick examples: I buy Call of Duty games for the robust multiplayer. The single player campaigns are good, but I don't pull out my wallet for a single player COD experience. Similarly, I just finished Mass Effect 3. I bought it to scratch my space opera itch. I enjoy ME3's co-op survival mode, but that isn't what I paid for. Can I pay $30 or $40 and get what I'm looking for, with the savings found by cutting what is not thematically core to the franchise?Answering that question requires more insight into the business of games than I have. I like that Adam admits that the relationship between game-maker and game-player is an X for Y trade, even though there are quality and artistic considerations in that equation. As a game-player, I hope is that game-makers (especially on the publishing side) recognize that there is no panacea. People that play games are not a niche. Sometimes I want action based multiplayer and sometimes I want epic stories. Give me the highest quality for what I'm trying to pay for, and I will gladly pay you for it.
As a note, yes I realize I posted alot of times in a row, but that was all one big post before and for some reason the profanity filter would not let it go...so i broke it up into pieces like someone suggested on the forums and sure enough it worked...sorry for the confusion
(remember the final fight style game and volleyball ^_^)and many other extras all BUILT-IN to the game...if that was now...each new game mode along with a few character outfits would have been released by seperate dlc for the game, and that sickens me...but thats the world we live in now :(...With not as long of a tail available on games, developers gotta recoup somewhere right? *shakes head*

It's a tough field right now...I would imagine more people would wait for pre-owned price drops as well BUT seeing as were looking at next gen trying to not have full support for pre-owned,that may not be an option
Another issue would be the consumer backlash. We think people are upset NOW when games disappoint them. imagine what you would have if they had this Premium like pricing options. If Biowares ME3 sold 90-100 the amount of outcry we see now would be nothing compared to then. With raised premium prices comes Zomg raised(and possibly unfair unrealistic) expectations from the consumer. If your these premium prices I dare say meta critic scores and such may become almost correlated slightly in that regard like. If you charge the normal price of 70 people are more lenient and might look at stuff and say man for 70 this game was great 90+ scores all around BUT then say you have another game also great and arguably better than the other game but had some small issues here and there suddenly because it was 80-90 people rake it over the coals giving it barely 70+ because they are under the mentality that you charged and extra 10-20 for this and didn't even have the decently to properly QA this debacle NO SOUP FOR YOU!
What that means is a company may truly stand behind the belief that, well OUR game has double the time of skyrim so we will charge 110 and granted it might have even been worth 110 and then another company may look at that and go well dude our game is XYZ better than that game so 120, and we could see those 10 increases become more prevelant and happening more frequently then we ever saw before. And they might even be warrented price hikes for say better quality content...but where does it end?
Companies may start off okay, things like mentioned, skyrim, reasonably priced at 100 or something cause it's worth that but soon companies would start to charge more for games that were arguably NOT up to skyrim quality. Why? Cause they can. THEY believe the time they put in is worth the same price sticker like skyrim so they want you to pay that much. So what happens? A possibly decent game flops cause it prolly wasn't skyrim quality. Then there will be the company who just charge that much cause really, and thruthfully, sad as it is, cause they can. they will charge more cuase they can. They have a popular enough franchise and even if they know they didn't live up to the prior titles still make it super expensive, cause they can and it WILL sell only hyping gamers that it MUST be great. Look at the pricetag! It's even MORE than skyrim. Which then kinda adds a slippery slope like situation in the fact that no standeredized means no roof, no roof means no cap.
In regards to pricing, I can definitively see both sides of this coin. Honestly something that is more quality and more graphically intense seems understandable that it cost more(kinds like wii games 39 for the lesser games usually 49 for the big titles). However, the fact is gamers will be incredibly opposed to this much like what happened when Resident evil revalations and Snake eater for 3ds. The companies were trying to have them priced at 49.99 instead of 39.99 which was the max for 3ds games. People were outraged about this. Even if it was developmentally justified due to the new cartridge size + quality of the game gamers would hear none of this. For that reason un-standardized pricing would NOT be something gamers would like. And honestly I wouldn't trust developers to utilize it properly.
the making of the game, and the promotion cost of the game is in the price of the $60. so there is no excuse. used game sails have been around for more than 10 years. is people didn't buy used games these companies would not have gotten a new install base of customers. I don't see the difference between used game sales and used console sales. if I never traded my old consoles, and new games in. I would not have purchased the newer ones. which would not have given someone else a chance to enjoy what I have played for many years. the console and game companies would not have even half the fans they do now. the only people who actually lose money in all this is the people who trade in there games and consoles.
As a Final Fantasy fan, I'll pretty much pay for anything Square Enix will ask. Final Fantasy games are few and far in between these days, and anything that looks as good as 13-2 will definitely have my attention.However, the way they handle their DLC is a whole other story. Lately they've been pushing DLC like crazy, I am almost beginning to think SE intentionally left the 'good' ending out, with the sole purpose of distributing it as DLC. If so, that would be completely unfair to anyone unable to buy or see that content.
Its funny while watching this I relize i haven't bought a game in a year. I've basically decided that i'm either going to wait for a price drop on games I want or for a game of the year edtion (I due borrow games from friends). I use to buy games on pre-order or day of release for so many years and then I wasn't able to for two years and it completely changed my percpective. I wonder if the companies are releasing all this stuff so more gamers don't act like me. Waiting for saints row, gears of war, skyrim, and mass effect to come down in price. Though, even when they do, I might get oly two of them
Books, movies and music are luxuries also. We buy them to enjoy a luxury item and have a good experience from them.What if this exact same business "practice" was used with all luxuries. For just $10 more you can get the chapter in a Harry Potter book purposely left out? You payed $15 for your movie, go to the left theater please, but if you pay $5 more, go to the right theater and you can see the complete movie, with the 20 minutes we purposely left out. You purchased a CD, well if you want 2 of the songs we left out on purpose, that will be $5 more please.People are getting sick of corporate greed and deseptive practices. Nickle and diming. Fine print. And now, you save up to buy a game (that many can barely affoard), and find out to get the "complete" game, you need to play more. And what I think makes people upset even more, but they may not even be aware of, is here is yet ANOTHER example of how a wealthy person can get services and products that lower or middle income people can't often afford, and then they save up, and scrimp, and buy it, only to be told "$10 more please". For wealthy people, it's pocket change, for the other 99%, it's more hard earned money to buy the SAME game experience a wealthy person has so easily.
$59.99 is the price ceiling for me. If prices increase beyond that, I'll no longer be making Day 1 purchases; I'll just wait for the inevitable price drops -- whether it be digital or physical.
Personally I don't like how EA is milking us for more money right off the bat. Remember when games were $50? Now they are $60, with DLC for extra. I don't have a problem with what they did with ME2, you get some free stuff if you buy a new copy at launch. However, to hit me up for more DLC on Day One means that the DLC was already ready and should of been included in the original game. DLC should be something later down the road, like a major patch in an mmo.

To be fair, EA is after your money. Prime examples are SW:ToR and of course, mass effect 3. It's a good thing that now ps3 users can experience such a great game, but there was a time where the mass effect series was an exclusive game.
Collecter edition is $80 BUT you really dont need it at all.
ME 3 collectors edition is 80 bucks and not a bad deal considering what it comes with, but Adam's point about pricing a game based on it's individual value is on point. Skyrim is worth 90 to 100 bucks out of the box without any DLC. where as your typical Lego game for 360 is 40-50 dollars max.One thing about ME 3 is that it was slated to come out last year for the holidays so maybe it is just a fluke that this is day one DLC.
