Some AT&T users are discovering that their unlimited data plans aren't so unlimited after all. Kevin Pereira and Jonathan Geller from Boy Genius Report discuss the issue of AT&T throttling the top 5% of heavy data users by reducing their speeds amidst growing suspicions that the company wants to push their tiered data plans.

    wow. web surfing on any phone stinks. web surfing on a phone is my last resort. I avoid it like a plague, and i have unlimited. we should be thinking about the biger picture here and get free wifi across the country. Free wifi should be an American wright not a corporate provied privalege.i duno i just play video games.

    ATT can be sued for throttling....it's some work, but it can be done. Here's a link to a NY Times article I saw today:

    How you deal with this issue is by cancelling your contract. If you just clicked, or signed, a contract without reading it first then it's your own fault. However, by law if they change the contract you have the right to cancel, without penalty, if you do not accept the changes. Otherwise, wait til your contract runs out and then leave AT&T.

    lol, there is sooo much miss information in this video. if there was only so much bandwidth in the spectrum there wouldn't be anything past 1x data. It's all about data compression. 3G and 4G use the same spectrum as 1x does. The thing is AT&T doesn't want to spend money to make their network better. If they truly cared about their customers they would invest money and upgrade their towers and servers to handle the traffic. It's all about the money, plain and simple. DSL uses the same phone line my dial up did. I don't remember them coming into my house and running new wires to support data speed on the DSL when I had it. Same thing with Cable, I remember when I got 5MB internet back in 05 and it was fast! Now I can get 100MB through the same line. It's about them wanting to provide customer service vs lining their pockets with cash. They chose the latter. Go with a network like Verizon that is upgrading their network to support the speeds they offer. I had almost twice the speed when I used verizon then my friend did who had AT&T and I lived in a small town. When I had Verizon I was using about 10GB a day, I streamed music and videos via my home computer on my phone. I have Virgin Mobile now, I moved for a different job and it pays less :/ (But I enjoy it!!) I spend 25 a month and got unlimited everything but mins, only 300 of them. I use about 5-6 GB a day with them. They use the sprint network. This is the 21st century not the late 20th. Our Technology is supposed to be advancing not stalling out.

    1.The reason I and the majority of the data customer/users bough and SMARTPHONE like the iPhone is that we are able to EASILY use the internet, mail, maps, etc ON THE ROADS OR WHEN WE ARE FULLY MOBILE or whatever place we are located. As you ignorantly say there are not really many Wi-Fi hot spots available everywhere (not here and I leave in a big city) when we are on the ROADS, Highways driving, hiking, at stores, Dr. offices, etc. I just want to QUICKLY be able to pull my damn portable iPhone anywhere anytime with the 3g data service crap and access information from web pages and my data anywhere I want to at anytime ANYWHERE . YOU just CAN NOT DO THAT With wi-fi while you park somewhere AT NIGHT or day and looking for a store information, DIRECTIONS or a map, etc somewhere that is NOT YOUR HOME ONLY, your or Wi-fi it s not the answer stupid You. Lmao. MOBILE SMARTPHONE MEANS YOU CAN USE IT ANYWHERE ANYTIME AND PLACE & WI-FI IS NOT THE answer all if you are not home. I guess your public circle is very limited very small and sad, you are not very adventurous/outdoors kind of person and all you do many hrs of the day like you said is facebooking and looking at boring PC screens..lmao.
    2.It s a matter of PRINCIPAL and at&t lied, deceived you & us into this unlimited data crap plan. One OF the reasons I bought the at&t iPhone because they deservedly advertise the unlimited data plan . When I was going home tired after work, I wasn t about to & for 30-45 minutes read the contract. Just the main big letters parts or the beginning.
    3.Suryu you are a fool, you're like a sheep, brainless and naive to believe trust at&t, by you paying for data service that you don t use and let them convinced you to use wi-fi at home..HAha Lmao. I believe you shouldn t have to do that if you re PAYING FOR A SERVICE THEY DON T WANT TO PROVIDE NOW or you have to pay more for it. You are RETARDED YOU Bought A portable MOBILE iPhone SO YOU CAN USE IT AT HOME ON WI-FI .:-/ :D SO LOONY and stupid and does not sound very smart. Like I said SINCE I PAID FOR I want to be able to use 3g and or wi-fi when I CHOOSE TO ANYWHERE, AT HOME, ON THE ROADS etc. Wi-fi shouldn t be at&t s answer SINCE THEY created this problem to begin with BY NOT HAVING ENOUGH COMMUNICATIONS INFRASTRUCTURE AND THEN BLAME US THE CUSTOMERS , THAT S JUST WRONG, you are very naive to listen to them or you sound like someone that works for at&t maybe..:)

    Verizon offers much slower internet speed? BULL! My buddies Iphone, who is on Verizon, is as fast as my Android, on Verizon, and my other buddy has the newest iphone on AT&T, and his is CLEARLY slower than the one on Verizon, and this is with roughly, equally priced plans.

    um im sure most you people use your phone in ur home where u have internet or wifi. just use the damn wifi. gosh! i have an at&t iphone 4 i can talk and browse the web at the same time on wifi and i don't gotta pay nada. yea i understand they say unlimited but thats another word for american dream because there is no such thing as unlimited everything has a limit. im in a populated area with wifi everywhere so im good idk how you use that much data saying how much u hate this girl on fb lmao but come on use a computer once in a while

    I have "unlimited" data and just started getting these messages 2 months ago. I agree, you will have better service in a tiered plan, but for a $PRICE. If you go over that limit, then you will be charged extra. And boygenius mentioned you will be able to do more with tiered plans, like tether. I hope you don't plan on watching any videos, because the basic 3 gb can go pretty fast. Steaming movies, might as well pay in advance that day you plan to watch.

    I'm not a heavy user, average about 4 gb a month. I don't want to pay an extra $20 to pay for 5 gb (current ATT rate for 5 gb = $50) when I already pay $30 for so called UNLIMITED data. I know, maybe I should use WiFi more. But I shouldn't have to look for an alternative for a service I'm paying for. This only gives me an incentive to switch carriers. In ATT's words, "Thanks for being a loyal customer, now bend over!"

    I also have been for many years a LOYAL customer, PAYED for a data plan that was TOLD and BELIEVED them was UNLIMITED, THAT WAS ONE OF THE REASON I WAS ATTRACTED OR "lured" TO THIS DATA PLAN AND AGREE TO SIGN. & Now THEY want to change things cause THEY can't handle the unlimited plans (so why in the first place they LIE & offered to the people if "their network" in reality can not handle it) and blame it "on us" now THE customers. I think even if it is on their contract that "they can change" any of the plans or terms bla bla bla WE THE CUSTOMER CAN STILL SUE at&t for lying to Us SIMPLY BECAUSE IS JUST NOT RIGHT OF THEM BECAUSE THEY LIED TO US FROM THE BEGGING, ON THEIR OWN Commercials OR DECEIVING Advertisements. I am Thinking about suing them or joining a class action law suit (I'm actively & presently looking online for an active & strong class action law suit against them). It's just not right of them, they can't just take advantage and do whatever they want especially if I'M PAYING, AGREE & SIGNED FOR SOMETHING THEY can't deliver now because "it is me" but really is THEIR OWN PROBLEM for not having THEIR OWN NETWORK CAPACITY to handle the customers. Shame on at&t and many OF their's & the world's present business practices. It is getting worse & I think WE THE PEOPLE should begin to stand up because it seems to me that our own government is also allowing this crap to happen by not controlling business like at&t & allowing them to do whatever unjustified illegal business practices (reducing my speed or "throttling") they want to do to us THE CUSTOMER OR CONSUMER, WHO IS THE ONE THAT PROVIDES THE REVENUE TO THEM CRAPPY CORRUPTED COMPANIES LIKE "AT&T".
