The LG Insignia LW5600 3D TV comes with a 55" LCD screen, LG Cinema 3D technology and limitless entertainment with the LG Smart TV feature. But how do all these features play out? Kevin Pereira and Candace Bailey take a closer look on Gadget Pr0n.

What You Need To Know

  • The LG Insignia 3D TV has a 55" LCD screen and measures 1.2" thick.
  • The TV weighs almost 60 lbs with the stand.
  • It looks better than the Sony Bravia TV we reviewed earlier and the design features a smaller bevel and a clear plastic ridge.
  • You can mount this television on the wall or use the swivel base.
  • Inputs include 4 HDMI and 2 USB ports on the side for wall mounting.
  • Components are in the back.
  • The TV is Wi-Fi ready with a dongle.
  • The features that make this TV stand out are the apps, like LG's Smart TV app that allows you to browse the Internet, but it's slow and you have to type using a virtual keyboard.
  • You can also download apps, widgets and stream media from YouTube, Netflix and other services, which is cool.
  • The menu interface is integrated with the Apps menu, so you have to navigate your way through to adjust the settings, and this can feel clunky at times.
  • The TV also comes with a Magic Motion remote, which acts similar to a Nintendo Wii remote.
  • The remote doesn't feel gimmicky and the icons are large enough on the screen, but we wish that the TV and Magic Motion remotes were combined into one.
  • You can watch HD programming in 1080' and the screen is LED backlit, which means you get a thinner TV, a brighter display and more energy efficiency.
  • In 2D, we found the picture quality to be on par with other LCD televisions.
  • The colors are bright and accurate with deep blacks.
  • The screen has a wide viewing angle with a matted screen.
  • The TV has a 120 Hz refresh rate which is now the standard for HD TVs.
  • We did notice some artifacting when motion blur was turned on to its highest setting.
  • You can also watch TV and movies in 3D and as a bonus, the TV comes with 4 pairs of passive 3D glasses.
  • This TV has a polarizing film over the screen, which works with the glasses to create a 3D effect.
  • This means the 3D image is brighter and the glasses are a lot lighter, cheaper and don't require batteries.
  • Movies and video games looked good and there was minimal ghosting.
  • This is a pretty big TV so you do have to sit a few feet back for optimal 3D viewing.

Price

  • $1,599 for a 55" TV.

Rating

  • 4 Seals of Approval out of 5. (How do we rate gadgets?)
  • We really liked the display and wide viewing angle.
  • The Wi-Fi dongle and Smart TV apps were nice additions.
  • The 3D quality is good and the passive glasses were more cost effective.
  • If you're looking for a 3D TV with these features, this one is very good.
