MSI GT780DXR Gaming Laptop Review

Upgrade your gaming gear with the MSI GT780DXR gaming laptop with its NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570M graphics processor, its 17.3" full HD anti-reflective display and fully programmable colored keyboard. Blair Herter and Candace Bailey rate this $2,000 gaming laptop for Gadget Pr0n.

What You Need To Know

  • The MSi GT780DXR promises desktop power in a portable package.
  • The design isn't the prettiest thing in the world.
  • The gaming laptop weighs almost 9 lbs, which isn't the lightest thing to carry around.
  • The GT780DXR is packed with features, including 5 USB ports (2 of them are 3.0).
  • There are subtle touches of brushed steel to break up the monotony of the black plastic.
  • The keyboard looks pretty slick: it's backlit and fully programmable.
  • You can change the colors and pattern for it to blink.
  • We found the keys themselves to be somewhat unresponsive.
  • The trackpad is a little small but if you're gaming, you're going to be using a mouse anyay.
  • The size of the laptop is partially due to the 17.3" screen and sizable speakers.
  • It's full HD with 1920x1080 resolution.
  • The color was very good, vibrant, and accurate and the backlight was brighter than most.
  • We were particularly impressed with the vertical viewing angle on this.
  • As far as sound was concerned, the speakers were fantastic.
  • Two front facing speakers and a down-firing subwoofer gave us one of the best sounding laptops we've tested.
  • Even at full volume, there was no distortion to speak of.
  • The laptop performed great: it comes with 12 GB of RAM, NVDIDIA's 570M graphics processor that has 1.5GB of video RAM.
  • There's also an Intel core i7 processor that runs at 2 Ghz but can be overclocked all the way to 2.9Ghz.
  • When playing Battlefield 3, we were able to use the graphics set to the highest levels with almost no frame rate issues.
  • When we went to play multiplayer, we had to take the settings down to normal.
  • During our benchmark tests, the Msi tested very high, earning solid scores in all categories.

  • $1,800

  • 4 Seals of Approval out of 5. (How do we rate gadgets?)
  • This handled almost everything we threw at it.
  • The screen is fantastic.
  • This is one of the best sounding laptops we've ever heard.
  • It might not be the prettiest or most portable computer in the world, but if you are looking for a good value in a gaming laptop, the GT780DXR is the way to go.
