Sessler's Soapbox: I Hate Numbers
Adam uses the response to his Uncharted 3 review to talk about his distaste for applying numerical values to the quality of creative works.

THANK YOU ADAM!!!! I have always relied on you guys at X-Play to be truly honest of the mechanics of games and the artistic value of them for deciding on my purchase of a game. This system of rating everything we come into contact with is sickening and stagnant and for video games does not do it justice. You have every right to get mad at this, and this goes to you above, this rating system needs to stop because good friends of mine will not play certain games which I know they will like simply because some site gave it a 7.5 out of 10! What is that telling you, I know what it is telling me..."oh we did not have the time or enery to detail the different aspects of this game so simply it looked pretty, and easy on my brain." The simplifying needs to end in this country and we need to start specifying the qualities of art more! Thankyou Sessler for this we need more individuals like you who care about the response to games and idea that these are simply to test for more avenues to explore!

I'm not pissed off about the Xplay score Uncharted 3 has. 4 out of 5 it's not a bad rating at all. It's just your review in some point doesn't make any sense. You said "this is bad, that is bad", "there's no comparison with Uncharted 2" and so on. And then you came up with a 4/5. That's why I think Xplay reviews in general need a re formulation. Change the score system, remove it... whatever but something has to be done to avoid situations like this in the future.

Don't get me wrong. I respect you Adam, be sure I do. The point is it's been awhile when I started not trusting xplay reviews for the things I just mentioned above.

Whatever, there is no justifying giving Uncharted 3 a 4/5, when your same editorial staff this year alone gave 5/5 to games like NBA2K12, Resistance 3, Gears of War 3, and Mortal Kombat.

X-Play and the G4 site either need to switch to a 1.0 through 9.9 type rating system to be taken seriously, cause this is a goddamn joke. Uncharted 3 is not an 8/10, and I guarantee is is a lot better than those games I listed above, even if you didn't like it as much as Uncharted 2 or thought the co-op mission stories were fluff (his biggest criticism against the multiplayer, puh-lease he obviously played it for like an hour).

Hell, a F- through A+ system has WORLDS more nuance than 1 star 2 star 3 star 4 star 5 star.... No one takes your reviews or opinions seriously until you apply a different system. I do read the reviews, but if a score is misappropriated because you have such a limited rating system than why read your review when I can go to another site?

Also I did read the review and it sucked, you talked about multiplayer for 2 small paragraphs and said the co-op plot stuff was fluff (which it is) and that it all felt tacked on..... Just completely absurd, uninformed crap. Why talk about the plot stuff in co-op like a negative?!?!? THere are real criticisms to be levied, as well as a lot of praise, but no you write about mutliplayer for like... 25 seconds worth of reading when it is something myself and tens of thousands of others are going to dump 100 hours + into and be loving it.

Adam.... Now that I was actually able to look at your soapbox -- (the digital let me down earlier) -- I stand by my earlier comments... Grow Up! (or better yet... Let them grow up!) You're a slave of this system... It may make you sick, but you are a member, no, you are an influence...

You seek for change, but I don't think appealing to the masses will make any changes at this point...

Adam, I've heard you harp about how you don't like giving reviews numeric ratings (for many years now) -- "just read my review"... What!

I know that you have been in this field for a long time now... However, I have also been living for a long time now (just like you) and the world has moved on. It's like the credit rating system... If you are not at the top of the heap, then you're crap! That whole system is also numeric/digital (as I am sure you are painfully aware.) If you slip at all, you are mud..... But wait! -- hear my situation (review)! But they won t. They belong to the digital... It is easier to believe the number that your computer gives, than the (analog) information that the situation gives you!

You don't believe me! You re a creature of a different world... You don't belong to the digital -- you're an analog... It's no use complaining about the numbers -- they were created for the masses for easy digest. I know you're trying to educate, but I don't think the digital cares. If you don't have an easy to digest number -- then it's a problem on your part! Don't you get it! You re a victim of your world, of your place, of your stature, of your means... Any Suggestions?? Escape the digital? I don't think that is going to happen any time soon...

By the way, "analog" is an old term, but it doesn t mean obsolete! Hell, I think some analog things are vastly superior to digital things, so there is yet hope!

I completely 100% agree with you Adam. Were so busy trying to grade and evaluate things that we don't actually end up talking about them.

Adam i totally agree when of the things i look forward to the most when playing a great game is calling my buddy up and have a very long discussion with them about all aspects of the game what they good have done better worse things we each would have changed how it stood up to other games in it's genre or if it was a sequel how was it an improvment for the franchise or not so good and it really pisses me of when people think we need to dumb it down why do we need to dumb it down it's an insult to yourself and all the people who put all the effort in to make I will always stand by the wriiten review and thank you for making me and my friends not feel so alone in the discussion of video games!

Ah, Adam said the "M" word (METACRITIC!)! I could tell it was gonna be rant-y from there. I don't like it either, let it out Adam - but we gotta simplify it,

that's just the way it is.

I ABSOLUTELY agree, that why i like that one site (cant remember name) that gives an extensive review without a number score. but Adam even with your smart and rationale statements, it wont change the mind of a close minded trolling fanboy. it is the sad part of this subculture

Video games are not art, but they do contain art.

i agree. i have never understood numerical sores. i have played plently of games that have had low scores and loved them. like adam said games are creative works, anyone can experience them differently.
