Game Maker is free to download to make your own games.
I personally got a student version of 3Ds Max, download UDK free and just learned to used those. 3Ds Max was used to make everything you see in Company of Heroes, Dawn of War and Warhammer 40K Space Marine.
I'm currently in the process of putting a portfolio together. Just remember, a portfolio of work is 100 times more useful than a university degree.
