As a bioengineering major, I can say its very possible that we will have prosthetic limbs that will have nearly full functionality of lost ones within a few decades. The eye is a different story. The blind man with the chip implant and goggles is where we are with that right now, but in 10 years it may reach a point where it is practical for use when paired with a seeing eye dog. Another neat area the video doesn't cover is internal organs. Those are more challenging because the human body is not very welcoming to new foreign objects. Growing a whole new organ is not the same as growing new tissue. A single organ often has many different cells specifically grouped and organized to work together. And we are not yet at the point where we can reproduce such specifications. But there has been a lot of progress with simpler organs, like the bladder. The replacements are essentially made by making a "cell scaffold" from a synthetic polymer shaped like a sac that can expand and contract. It is then lined with bladder cells grown from the original bladder. Several people have already received these and have been living with them with no complications for years. Of course, the biggest challenge of designing all of this neat stuff is making it affordable at the end.

It's nice to dream of a world like the game, but sadly we are sooo behind the curve it will take centuries to get to the level of replacing human body parts with synthetic parts and feel like they are the same or better! It's just that 99% of the human body is still a mystery.

...But we can always dream.... Dream of electric sheep ;)!

agreed, and although i can personally cope seeing eye surgery myself (i've had some done to replace cataracts, while i was awake at the time) it is definitely not for everyone, so yes, g4 should put a warning before this video starts, unless they intend to shock or gross people out, which wouldn't surprise me.

Wow, WOW, one of the single best vid's Ive seen on this site. Good find...

Just one cautionary note tho, maybe you should put an M rating on it. That surgery bit there at the begining caught me off guard(I hate watching that kind of stuff, but here, it IS part of the story).

    Peace all.
