I know purists of the original xcom series keep harping on this not being a true xcom; however, two things. One: I played the original xcom back in the 90s. Let's be frank, even back then it was a unique idea, but it wasn't really all that awesome a game. I really think nostalgia can blind us to certain facts. Try re-watching the most beloved 80s or early 90s animated series. TMNT, Thundercats, hell even Transformers. They don't hold up very well. Sometimes, updates and changes are a good thing, and, in the case of this new X-Com, it's a very good thing if you can take off the blinders long enough to see it.

And Two: This isn't trying to poop on the original X-Com since this is, as they just said, a reboot/re-imagining of the series. Much in the same vein as the new Tomb Raider. The fact is, though people enjoy some degree of tactics and challenge in their respective games, the whole RTS genre is still, kind of, a niche market, save for Starcraft or Civ 5. And even in those cases, these aforementioned titles are usually more popular overseas, e.g. South Korea. This new X-Com has to appeal to the largest gaming market which is, no surprise, the American gaming market. As such, it's can't be a niche title, it has to try to appeal to a broader demographic.

Now, sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't; however, in this case, I think it works in spades. I mean, the new fixes since last year harkon to the original XCOM while still giving it a fresh take. Also, we've got the story set during the late 50s to the early 60s which was that classic G-Man/Men In Black era where Sci-Fi really just went out there with the space race and all. All together, I think this will be a really promising game and I hope they maintain this creative direction.
