The Asus Eee Pad Transformer takes portable gadgets to the next level with its Android 3.0 OS on a 10.1" multi-touch screen, dual cameras and the ability to turn into a full fledged laptop with a docking station. Chris Hardwick and Candace Bailey review the $400 device for its official Gadget Pr0n rating.

What You Need to Know

  • It feels pretty light, but it's still heavier than the iPad 2
  • It runs on Android 3.0 and mostly has the same specs as other Android tablets
  • The touch screen is just as responsive as we'd expect, which is good
  • We've said it before and we'll say it again, Honeycomb is infinitely customizable, so you'll be able to add widgets, music players, picture galleries and a bunch of other stuff to your heart's content
  • We think this is the slickest and most powerful version of Android yet
  • We're happy to see that speed is consistent among all Android 3.0 tablets, so you'll pretty much have the same experience no matter which one you're using
  • The 5 megapixel camera on the back takes pictures and video, but there's no flash, so things might get grainy
  • The front camera is 1.2 megapixels
  • There’s an optional keyboard dock; it's a little wonky getting it into the dock, but once you do, it turns your tablet into a laptop
  • The keyboard works great, as does the touchpad and you won't have to touch the screen when it's in the dock because you'll have a normal mouse cursor
  • You also get 2 USB ports and an SD Card slot on the dock

Price

  • The 16 GB version is only $400, and it has a Micro SD card slot, so you can expand the memory
  • The $150 keyboard dock is fun, but you definitely don't need it

Overall Rating

  • 5 Seals of Approval Out of 5 (How do we rate gadgets?)
  • If you're looking for an Android tablet, this is one to get, because it won't break the bank, and it'll do everything you need it to do

compare it to the IPAD? cmon.. if apple would invest more in product development than their ads they could have produced better sequels to their products.. I mean.. delaying features on the original Ipad (e.g. camera) so that you can put it on the second and call it 'innovation'.. and IOS? yeah right... now they copied android's notification feature pixel by pixel.. its basically admitting that they have nothing else in mind.. amazing product like this could probably never beat ipad in terms of market share but as we all know these products as good as the eeepad are intended for people who actually use them to the fullest... the ipad is made for and marketed to people with computer learning disabilities and social networking drones... long gone the days when the now infamous apple logo is a symbol of technological innovation and creativity.. now its just a fashion accessory...

This looks cool. I was wondering if it would make a good college laptop too. Can it support Microsoft Word? My baby sister is looking for a good laptop for her first year in college.

Look at that it is a nice tab defenetly, the only thing holding it down below the ipad are 4 things,
design and looks, IOS ease of touch, garage band, and i movie. other that that it is a 5 out of 5!!

Anything to beat the Apple bandwagon all the masses have been brainwashed into believing is the holy grail. This thing whoops the iPad easily because it's not proprietary. It's a shame that so many people don't know that it can be better!

You really think that G4 gets paid to rate things 5 out of 5. Maybe Microsoft maybe. Asus is on top of their game. Don't underestimate them they've made great netbooks and this is the best tablet out there. I will be getting one before my printer runs out of ink. I'll never print paper for myself again.

Thanks for the review on this G4. This has peaked my interest for sure. Interesting you got a hold of the 400 dollar 16GB version. I did some Gewgling last night, and they only seemed to show a 32GB model for 500 dollars, and most places were sold out.

What I am curious about is the no contract thing, and how it ties into a wireless carrier like Verizon.

I love the specs on this thing.
It's got 512 MB more main memory than iPad2.
    CPU is very similar.
    GPU probably similar.

You guys forgot to mention that the keyboard dock gives the Eee Pad an additional 8 hours to the battery life.

G4 have clearly been paid to do this ad. For a device with so many pitfalls, how did it get 5/5? Listen to how they cover up / divert attention from the negatives (such as weight). It has no flash, the keyboard is priced at a third of the value of the device (what the?) and much more.

    3.5 to 4 at most...
