Canon PowerShot 500 HS Digital Camera Review

The Canon PowerShot 500 HS digital camera continues the Canon tradition of great point and shoots with 12.1 megapixels, a DIGIC 4 image processor, 3.2 touch screen and 1080p video recording. Kevin Pereira and Candace Bailey review the $300 digital camera!

What You Need To Know

• The Canon PowerShot 500 HS may seem big at first: it measures about 1" thick and weighs about 6 ounces.
• The size is due to the huge touch screen on the back of the camera.
• You'll probably be tapping the touch screen twice on things a lot because it won't register every touch.
• Swiping and scrolling is even tougher.
• The touch interface is actually better than other Canon cameras we've used but it's still far from perfect.
• Canon added features to the 500 HS like slow motion video and high speed shooting.
• The slow motion video feature actually works pretty well, even in low light but you can only record a maximum of 30 seconds.
• The pictures look really great.
• Outdoor photos look just as good (if not better) than any other point and shoot camera we've tested.
• Colors are accurate and details are amazingly sharp.
• Low light photos are also great though there were occasions when it couldn't focus fast enough.
• 98% of the time, the pictures look incredibly sharp and the flash exposes evenly.
• The full 1080p video recording looks fantastic.
• This is easily the best video we've seen from a point and shoot.
• The HD video is detailed, vibrant and surprisingly stable.
• The wide angle lens is also a huge advantage.
