Motorola Atrix 4G Review

The Motorola Atrix 4G offers standard features like a 4" multi-touch screen, dual core processor and MOTOBLUR widgets but it also allows users to web browse, edit documents and take calls on a laptop! Blair Herter and Sara Underwood take a look at the $130 smartphone that could be perfect for your multi-tasking needs.

What You Need to Know

  • The Motorola ATRIX is just a hair taller and wider than the iPhone 4 and practically weighs the same
  • The phone feels plasticky on the back
  • It has a simple and standard smartphone layout
  • There are mini-USB and HDMI ports on the side
  • It's 4” touch screen is not as crisp as the iPhone‘s retina display, but looks pretty bright with its 960 x 540 resolution
  • The recessed power button in the back is odd from a design standpoint, but it also doubles as a fingerprint scanner for locking your phone
  • After registering your fingerprints, all you have to do is swipe your finger across the pad to unlock the phone
  • What sets the ATRIX apart from other smartphones is that it runs on a 1 GHz. dual-core processor and Android 2.2, which means it's fast
  • If this were a super hero, it's the Flash of the Justice League of smartphones
  • It loads and launches games such as Angry Birds faster than the iPhone 4 and the HTC EVO
  • The multi-touch screen is responsive, allowing you to swipe, pinch, zoom, and type with ease
  • The MOTOBLUR interface lets you customize your widgets and social networking updates
  • It's on AT&T’s 4G network
  • We tested it and got 3G-like speeds, which means that 4G service is not fully operational yet
  • However, it can run Flash-heavy websites, and play embedded videos
  • The phone can also become a mobile hotspot for up to 5 devices, which will cost you an extra $20 per month
  • There's also a 5 megapixel camera that shoots 720p video
  • Images look okay, but there's a touch of grain in the photos
  • Video is okay, at best and there's a lot of grain and digital noise in dark settings
  • There's also a front facing VGA camera for video conferencing on Google Chat
  • It also has a laptop dock that you can synch with your phone
  • You dock with the 11.5” laptop, which mirrors your phone's interface
  • There are USB ports to plug in other peripherals, such as a mouse
  • It uses Firefox and Adobe Flash to browse the web
  • You can also make calls with the speaker phone
  • It's a cool accessory, but it's an additional $500

  • $130 with a contract on Amazon Wireless

Overall Rating

  • 4 Seals of Approval Out of 5 (How do we rate gadgets?)
  • It has a simple and lightweight design, the dual core processor allows you to run all of your apps without a hitch and internet speeds will increase once AT&T's 4G service is fully available
  • The laptop dock is a cool accessory, but not worth the extra money

I was almost convinced that the browser might actually be better than mobile Safari until they pinched and zoomed on their own site. Looked tailor made for an Epic Fail segment.

Give it a month and no one will remember this device because another Android phone will pop on the scene claiming dominance. I don't know you Android fans keep up. Seems like there's a new phone every 6 weeks claiming to the best phone in the world.

I wants me one. It's a soothing feeling to know it'd be a 5 star phone if I put an apple sticker on it.

Cool phone. If i didn't have the Droid X, i'd definitely get it. 500 bucks for an accessory? Moto execs, what were you smoking? oh yeah, i will forgive the blonde chicks laugh and inability to read a teleprompter. Just smile and look pretty. Good job guys.
