Not a lot of corporations like Apple and Sony are happy with George Hotz (a.k.a. GeoHot), the hacker responsible for jailbreaking the iPhone and taking on the PlayStation 3. Kevin Pereira talks to George about his work as a hacker, Sony's lawsuit and his plans for other gadgets.

I understand why so many people are angry. Yes PSN has been down for a while, and yes I could see how people using hacks on online games could ruin your experience, but this kid is just allowing us to use a piece of equipment that we own how we want to use it. I do not think Sony has the right to tell us we cannot put our own programs on the PS3. Imagine that If you bought a computer from a certain company and it was pre-loaded with programs that were designed by that company, and installing new programs were not allowed. Now say that these pre-loaded programs were not as good as other programs available. Would that upset you? To know that there is a superior program out there, but you are not "allowed" to use it because the company that manufactured your PC says its not allowed. I for one think that is ridiculous. This is a blatant way of forcing you to use something that you very well may not want to use. Sony is shoving their product down your throat effectively, and I applaud Geohot and anyone else that is sticking it to these major corporations. If you think that PS3's software is perfect and it doesn't need to be changed then don't jailbreak it... But there are plenty of people who believe that they can get more value out of their systems by changing to custom firmware... who are you to say they shouldn't be allowed to do so? I support the freedom to do whatever you want with any kind of device you own, whether it is to leave it how it is or jail break it or set it on fire. Its yours... use it however the F you want.

What u dont seem to understand is u cannot do these things because in result just like now u have created a big problem an broken the law at the same time. Sure u wanna jailbreak then go ahead but u should have ur PSN account disabled an u can do it all u want. People always trying a way to do things ur not supposed to ruins it for everyone else an now we r all without PSN so I hope that makes u happy. Also when will we see jailbreaking on XBOX cuz kinda funny this geohotz guy is only messin with sony. Hell wut about android an all those things, this guy is no hero just another dumbass with a grudge r maybe he is workin undercover for microsoft, sorry just my own thinking. If u pick on one system u might as well do it for another. If this guy was for real XBOX would also be havin problems which they r not. They have the same rules that sony does when it comes to content so why isn't anyone really looking at the big picture an seing that somethings not right here.

"Not a lot of corporations like Apple and Sony are happy with George Hotz (a.k.a. GeoHot), the hacker responsible for jailbreaking the iPhone and taking on the PlayStation 3."

ok exact words from the top of this article. yet another perfect example of lowering standards for idiots like this to use their advantage...if apple wasn't happy with what geohot did for the iphone and ipad...you know the whole hacking...errr , sorry, "jailbreaking" then why the hell would they allow a law to be passed that would allow it?! how does that make ANY sense at all what-so-ever?! think logically people and you all are gonna see human nature becomes the ultimate bad guy here...sony wants to make money, they make ps3, people can't afford to buy what sony offers, so like a bum who robs that bank cuz they have no money, some sorry ass lil boy that can't get females, starts to hack, sorry jailbreak systems, instead of using their so called knowledge to make a better product. thats how one takes over and beats the competition...by becoming the competition! the gaming industry allows for too much of this bs to carry on that i'm surprised we haven't seen done what nintendo said when 3DS was hacked day 1...they threatened to not even release the 3DS altogether. i guess in their case the hack wasn't so bad....but what if i was? then what, no 3DS! now imagine no ps3, no xbox, no console period, then whats there to hack, sorry jailbreak...think logically people!

Just as a side note (not to G4 but the user base)- I'd like to see some facts please, not just statements from Sony, Anon, or GeoHot. All of the parties 'interviewed' are obviously biased. OF COURSE GeoHot is going to say it does not allow for piracy and OF COURSE Sony is going to say that it does, and Anon is not a reputable source simply by their very essence of being annonymous.

I'd like to see a third party invited (maybe by G4?) to look at the code and post an analysis.

This is absolutely rediculous. This is like saying "I'm tired of paying for my electricity so I'll just tap into my neighbors lines for free electricity."
It's gunna get shut down, it's gunna get you in trouble, and it's gunna hurt innocent customers. This crap sparked Anon and now PS3 users worldwide have lost access to part of products they put their hard earned money into. Not to mention legally permitting hacking is making games boring, unfair, and completely pointless. The point of games like Call of Duty is to test your ability to adapt to warfare, not hack the game so that a player instantly dies when you fire your weapon. Wheres the fun in that? Who, in the interest of actual gaming, can support this bullcrap?

Do you guys understand a word GeoHot said? He clearly stated his jailbreak has preventative measures to keep people from using Pirated Games. Now, will this stop another hacker from exploiting his hack and allowing this? Who knows, but thats not on his hands.
We buy the hardware, we should be able to do as we please. Sony needs to man up and beef up their security on their end instead of being cheap money sucking bastards like every other manufacturer/corporation out there.
There is no difference between jail-breaking an iPhone, and jail-breaking a ps3, aside from different steps to do so, they're both advanced technology placed in our hands with our money.

this goofy looking bastard is F'd! Talented? Yes indeed! He should put that talent to GOOD use and make millions of dollars doing it. Instead of jerking off in his bedroom at his parents house.

Your point is valid fatass, and i did say that i dont think geo had the intentions of letting hackers run amuck. I agree that its the hackers and pirators that should be targeted. I certainly dont have a problem with programmers coming in and creating programs that sony couldnt or didnt allow. The fact of the matter is tho, IMO it may have been a nesecary evil that we have a closed system to prevent potential lapses in integrity in the online community. I dont know, i use my ps3 for games and movies, i dont need it to transform into optimus and defeat the decepticons for me. but thats just me. I like your comparison with the PC but thats exactly the reason why I have a PC. I bought a ps3 so that I didnt have to worry about upgrading parts every 6 months or to install all sorts of programs on it. As long as the games are of quality and others users dont screw with me im happy. Yea i paid 300 dollars for it but i also believe im getting plenty value out of it. Anyways geo this geo that, i guess as long as the hackers and pirators are taken care of im cool with it.

And as for mw2 just because you didnt get hacked doesnt mean many others havent. occasionally getting superhumans powers is cool but having all your achievements wiped out is not.. anyway it doesnt matter its one game and ill let it go, life goes on. I was just concerned that it might happen to other games too.

Oh, and to add to LLama23 and Geocrap's comments, most of the lobbies are not hacked, in fact i searched for almost an hour throughout all of the game modes on MW2 just to find one that was hacked and gave up. Figured I'd install the patch myself, and well here I sit, with just about as much excitement as searching for a hacked lobby...

I believe that Jail-breaking should be completely legal. First of all you paid the crazy dollar for the gaming system and the games, you pay the hydro that runs it, you pay for the internet that connects it to everyone else. I also understand that Jail-breaking can be taken to the extremes of running pirated software, Trojans, messed up MW2 lobbies (which i actually find fun to join occasionally) and whatever other "powers" were released from this break. Its the same as the computer you sit at this moment, when you purchased it it came with several programs to get you started and thats it. Now though people have created programs to advance this experience. If it were not for hackers or shall we call them self-employed computer programmers because that is all they are doing, this very site probably would not exist, we would still be at the mercy of those several programs that came on your fresh out of the box computer. Still at the mercy of the companies that created those programs, and this is where we sit with the PS3. Sony has created a locked down system in which they control, games that they along with several other organisations restrict. In this case you get more of those programs or games, but under the watchful eye and price that Sony has allowed. So along comes a programmer to work with his own PS3 that he purchased and finds a way to expand outwards and create a way to run more applications than Sony has been able to make by themselves. This actually benefits Sony because this jailbreak now allows the PS3 community to do what they will with the system making it more appealing to customers. Instead of specifically targeting Geo for his program (which merely opens the platform for piracy rather than provide it) Sony should target the ones who actually write the programs that perform the action. Its sort of like selling a car to a guy, Geo being the salesman is not selling the car so that the buyer can run someone over, but rather selling it because the buyer needs to get from point a to point b. Its the buyers choice whether or not to run down granny on his way to point b. Geo specifically mentioned this platform is not for piracy or any actions which the DMCA prohibits, but rather so you can explore, expand, and enjoy your system further than Sony's far reach could provide. I myself am very interested in this matter for the fact that i would like to jailbreak my PS3 and install the well known package that lets you modify your own MW2 lobby which others can choose to join or not. I do not want to install this for piracy or for Trojans, this whole matter is based on choice. Make the right choice and have fun with it, make the wrong one and deal with years in jail for running down granny crossing the road...

Use other operating systems? Do you own your console?
Lets start with other operating systems. I for one, use what I like to think of as a COMPUTER, not a PS3. So why in the world would I want to make a video game run Linxus? But wait, they advertise you can do it on the PS3 box. I watched a Nike ad on TV where they were selling shoes, The guy jumped off of a bridge with a pair of Air sole shoes. Does this mean I can jump off of tall things with those shoes? WoW, I wonder if GeoHot can jail break them for me so they can do what they say. I would assume anyone with two working brain cells can understand my point.
Moving on. I do not think Mr. Hotz intended to ruin any online gaming that I do. But he did. Now I have 3-$50 plus games that I can no longer play online unless it is in a private match because some kid knows a guy that hooked him up with homebrew hacks and takes flight 1000 feet in the air and crashed AC130 airplanes into me. Look at the big picture here. All George Holtz wants is media attention, and he is getting it. He is looking for a big paying job and is still looking for that.
He is very smart, anyone has to give the guy that, but don't say you are doing this because of Sony. You are just avoiding the point that you have ruined ALOT of the multiplayer games by doing what you did.
I hope Sony floats 1000 feet in the air and crashes a AC130 into you, or better yet, jailbreaks your toilet and flushes you down with the other people that think you are so great.
Thanks for wasting the money myself and so many others invested into a gaming (not a PC) console.
You are the greatest ever. Nerd, Get a girl friend.

I ask all u geo supporters wheres the integrity. I dont understand how some of you cannot see geos error. My beef has nothing to with whether when someone buys a system it his then his property he can do whatever... blah blah. If he wants to make homebrew hey so be it. If sony's sueing bc they are mad, jealous, scared of profits whatever i dont care. however, i get extremely angry with the fact that he opened the floodgates to the wave of hackers now present on games like MW2 (@robustrobot trust me it took all my stats accolades away so yes they can affect YOUR console) and surely other games in the future. Piracy too, i pay for my games and now some shmuck accross the street has got it for free and 3 weeks before release?? SMFH. Sure there are always hackers out there but they were few and far in between... hes practically handed them the keys now... For all i know he had the best intentions trying to help the community. But for all his touted "genius" somehow he couldnt see that he was literally opening pandoras box for hackers.. come on geo, have some foresight.
