while i may bitch at the end of a game of halo... its usually about the skill or a certain kill. then after im bitching i congratulate that person for a wonderful kill and throw in a good game.
Adam I commend you for this soapbox especially, because I know first hand what it feels like to be bullied, and it's partially why I spend most of my time online to be honest. I'm in a wheelchair and I've gotten ALOT of crap in my younger years, and even now I don't have the greatest self esteem, specifically around women. But it does get better over the years and my confidence is very slowly going up. I actually went through a phase in my life where I actually had suicidal thoughts because of bullying, but thanks to my friends they helped my avoid that outcome. Now when I see or hear about someone being bullied I go out of my way to help them out. So again, kudos for this soapbox and thank you for letting people know they have your support.
You hit the nail right on the head. I play on xbox live and psn and it can get crazy sometimes. Especially on live. It's kind of sad what these ten year olds are saying. I guess that's the world we live in now.....
Its just like the saying goes. Beneathe every bully is a coward. Its true. I was not the nicest guy in high school but picked in the bullys and not the victims. I thought it would be good to give them a taste of their own medicine. I even broke a guy's nose for making fun of the special ed kids to their faces while they ran their snack stand at lunch time (the principal shook my hand). I feel bad about those moments now though and wished I had shown more restraint. The rep I had back then I could have just told him to stop and he would have. By protecting people from bullies I became one myself. Too many people get mad and just lose their cool. I was included in that bracket and took anger management. I really think anger management should be required in middle school which is just for social interaction anyway. On the other side of things my younger brother was bullied alot when he was young. He has autism and you can't really tell now but he was a really strange kid. People constantly bullied him until his growth spurt (he's 6'3 now) when he could defend himself and did comically in several instances. Despite the fact that no one bothers him now he still has some really bad self esteem and even some depression issues. Some people can't take bullying and really shouldn't have to. I don't think anoyone should kill themselves over it. I hate to say that I find that cowardly because I really feel bad that these kids who thought it was the only way out. Adam was right though. You have a whole life ahead of you so don't give up. High school is usually the worst of the worst but everything after that is cake and even if it isn't there are people who will help you. If you're a victim or even a bully feel free to talk to me. I've been there and council some people here and there for the high school. You can get me on twitter @thesecks
Thanks Adam, well said.
I got a one day suspension on xbox live for writing "Don't be a dick" in my motto section...Pretty ridiculous. I totally agree with you Adam, well said.
That was a great topic Adam. I agree with every view you have on this issue and hope things will get better. It's very nice of you to look out for others.
Agreed. Ban the h*ll out of bullies on the web. Teabagging, trashtalking, it has a limit and I agree that some people do it just to incite aggression in other people. It's rude, unsportsmanlike, and in the end you're the one who comes out looking like an idiot in the end. Props Sessler for putting it in 4 words.
One time my friend was being called gay and gay sounding. I then jumped in and said I was his lover and that we were together, and I just counter pointed everything they were saying, and they soon stopped. Reverse psychology at its best.
Good show! Dominance I think is the underlying cause of most aggressive crimes. Competitive video games and sports offer healthy outlets for building your own self confidence. However, competition is like a gateway drug to domination, which is the underlying cause of nearly all aggressive and violent crimes.Man will dominate man to his injury... We naturally like to be "good" at something. But, being better than someone else feels GREAT! More than that, being able to impose your will upon someone else is a very dangerous drug. Bullying, rape, gangs, excessive arrogance, hackers, manslaughter, alcohol induced belligerence, verbal assaults (as on the internets) are all products of the human desire to dominate. "If I'm better than you, if I can impose my will upon you, than I'm more god than you are... I'm powerful"Unfortunately, because we all have free will and it's easier to be a villian than a hero it's a difficult problem to stop. On the youth, especially as far as online games go, there's no reason a parent should let their kids lock themselves away with games of any kind (especially online versions). The parent should get involved. Learn to play, at least to watch. There's no excuse for a punk 14yo kid to have free reign to offend the world. If you don't have the time, then don't get the game. And don't use video games as a babysitter. Of course, all this is easy to say.As far as the more independent jerks (17+), the community does need to take action. We should be willing to sacrifice our gaming time to do the right thing. If someone is being offensive in any way to anyone, you should leave. You wouldn't ignore someone getting raped or jumped (beat up) or worse, at least we hope we wouldn't ignore that. So bullying in any variety shouldn't be ignored. Sometimes saying something is "feeding the trolls." I rather suggest we remind them why they live under bridges alone because they are unfit for society. If you tolerate it, even to enjoy your own game, then you are accepting it and making it worse. Desert the dicks and they'll have to please themselves or learn to play with others. But in the real world, it seems we love seeing this crap. Since the Real World on MTV it seems that people just love to watch the clown "be a rebel who doesn't play by the rules or care what people think." Reality tv is riddled with social parasites, and we eat it up for some reason. I can't stand the stuff, but apparently that's not the majority. And now T.O. and Ocho Cinco have their own show? But we hate them, right? But that's why we watch... Humanity is doomed...
It is for this very reason, that I refuse to enable voices on the 360, unless it is someone on my friends list. It makes the whole lot of the stupid people out there, a lot more bearable. That way they can say whatever they want to, and it will not affect me, in any way. As to be honest, I really could care less what someone is saying about me online. But, a lot of the people out there, feel ostracized, and by feeling that way, feel like they mean nothing to people, and thus start to get depressed. And then mix in with that, all the problems of their real life, and you have them solely looking to the internet for their source of freedom and reprieve from the real world. Then they get their pride / emotions destroyed by some bully, or just some jerk wad, that gets off on hurting people, and you have your recipe for disaster.
As a 32 year old Hispanic male I have gamed essentially all my life I log more time gaming then I would like to admit. I generally play games that are made for adults. My experiences with bulling generally revolve around what appears to be high school/college student saying expletives. I would have to say that there are too many adolescence playing games that are made for adults. This is where I've noticed the problems arise. So when these to worlds collide it's not pretty. I have to say that at times it s the adolescence starting trouble.
I often do not even plug in my microphone because of the sewage that pours out of player's mouth. Expletives, racial slurs, and violent speech is common place on xbox live. There is a big problem with female gamers being bullied. Several of my good friends who play online and are female get sent angry, violent, and sexist messages by guys who get taken down by them, it makes me very angry, and people wonder why there are not more female gamers out there. Its not just the terrible things people say but the stupidity that they also spew. Hearing kids curse and say terrible things online just makes me sad for the next generation.
If you're still in highschool it's just a crazy place. Dude, or dudet, it gets way better. I was taught to treat others the way I was expected to be treated. It really is a small world so being a non jerk does have it's advantages. Also I had to say the person playing Halo Reach was really bad. I was like a back seat driver saying no no turn right, why are you looking up, melee him!!! lol
Well said, i agree with you 100% a couple a weeks i encountered a group of people on Mw2,not just one person but a group of people talking smack about a specific race. When i herd this i was really shocked about the remarks they said. Gaming is suppose to be about having fun and enjoying the game, not to make someone or a specif group feel bad
Thank you for speaking out regarding the small number of people who are creating such a problem for everyone else. I commend you for using your show as a way to reach out and hopefully make a difference. You are the man Sess. Why can't we all just have fun and play some games...so you sniped me from across the map....whoo..the game goes on.
The gaming industry needs to promote friendlier communication. I mean, people should NEVER even come close to committing suicide from playing a video game. Also parents shouldn t be so disconnected from there kid(s) that they don t realize that there kid(s) are being emotionally torn to shreds by other people online. Life is too precious to have it end because others are jerks.
spot on ses, If your getting bullied do your best to ignore it, things will get better.
Thank you for the message, Adam, it's kind of you to lend your voice against bullying and discrimination. And thank you and the staff at G4 for working very hard to bring us all the pretties!
