I never been bullied but i think the people being bullied must have done somethig to the other for him to be bullied

I just don't even know what to say anymore, it's ridiculous that we still live in a world where it's instinct to rip another individual to pieces for our own satisfaction.

I'm a laid back pot head who, through his early years, hadn't been very socially developed, to the point of obliviousness to the problem. It's only in my late teens to early twenties that I've learned what an effect being bullied, both by people at school, over the internet, and even my own family has had on my life... it's such a heavy weight to bear and it's hard to even talk about. It's like every thing any one has ever said or done to me is just stuck to my back like a dead body and I'm just dragging them around. I, likr many have to shake off the bodies and move on. We can't let dead weight drag us down. But we can't just shake them off, not alone. We need to learn to stick up for one another and give the boot to thoses who just want to throw another dead corpse on the pile on our backs.

no matter what there will always be bullies on live and psn, you talk about banning, it only does so much, they could easily get another one cheep,(for xbox) or create a new account. i guess in a way, the further the tech the harder it is to sort of control this sort of thing. it seems like no matter what you do it gets worse, the bullies show no remorse, and suffer nothing do to freedom of speech, and the fact that there is no repercussion for their actions. if there was something set up to pin it on them to identify the bullies, and show the what hell they put us through, there could be less, but then 1st amendment would come up and all that bull.because the freedom to be an ass is more important to people than a persons life. as long as nothing happens to these bullies by more than just a ban, it will continue and online gaming will still be what it is but worse. by the way Adam your awesome.

This soap box was very well done, i myself have seen this happen many times and looked the other way not thinking any more than to just mute the people. however the more i play and mute people the more I'm muting my own gaming experience, i really wish i could just open up a game like back in the day(split-screen) and have a good time with some friends with out some person attempting to destroy the experience I'm paying so much for.
i mean what good is multi-player with other people when the AI are so much more polite?

I don't actually have anything game related to add to this. I'm glad you tackled this, Adam. As you mentioned the stories in the paper are horrific. I just don't understand that bully mentality.

It's not just gaming that is the problem, it's the internet, although the competitiveness of gaming tends to exacerbate things a little more. Mainly, as Adam said, the fact that there are no consequences is the root cause of the problem. In real life, you talk smack, you get punched in the face. On the internet, you say terrible things, then log off and go to bed.
I want to say, though, that verbally abusing and talking smack are two different things. I talk smack in video games from time to time, admittedly using profanity frequently, but I never go as far as to insult the person's lives, like using the F word(not f-u) or degrading mothers in obscene ways.
Talking smack is a ton of fun, being a total a-whole isn't.

Looking over some of the postings, I find it distressing that so many are so blindly raging about this issue and looking to spiral it into what amounts to the victimization of the bully. To bully a bully is to be no better than they. If you want to make a difference then don't go after the bullies, but rather stick up for the victims of bullying like Adam said. Not that it justifies their actions, but in all likelihood there is something very awful going on in the bullies lives for them to then translate that into victimizing another.
If we are going to take action against bullying, and we -blam- well should, then let us do it responsibly.

Out in the world,there is the potential for real consequences for acting that way,whether its from your own fist,a friend/relative's help,police intervention,or even just a well-placed blow from a blunt weapon... ;)
With online bullying,while there is no physical bullying,there's little,if anything,to stop or even remotely fix it,unless you're fortunate enough to run into the person using that gamertag down the road...Also, most companies' current 'efforts' amount to putting a bandaid on a bullet wound. It tends to come down to paying money to put up with other people's crap,rather than enjoying playing a game with other people. Really,why pay to put up with other people's crap when you can do that for free offline? While its not enough on its own to convince me to play something else,its contributes heavily. Hopefully developers will get the point someday.
I don't expect a community free of cussing or controversy,that's just no fun...But what constitutes harrassment is fairly clear,and is the sort of thing that very well could be cracked down on,given the small number of people responsible,yet nearly every developer refuses to. $$$$?

I don't think i was ever really bullied. some kids gave me some crap, until i beat them up. (that'll teach them to touch my yugioh cards lol) As for online "bulling," I agree with Mr. Sessler just report them. if you try and defend a person or tell them off, you just end up fanning the flames. *remember* DON'T FEED THE TROLLS!

Thanks, Adam. More people in the media and in places of influence need to overtly say the sorts of things that you have concerning this serious issue of bullying. We cannot be bystanders to this or any other type of malicious social ill.

In a world of mass communication and advanced communication like ours, it is sad that we can fail at something so basic to communication as empathizing with our fellow human. Knowing the rot is there, we can and must actively strive to change it.
