Samsung Fascinate Smartphone Review

The Fascinate is the latest in Samsung's Galaxy smartphone series, offering a one GHz processor, Android 2.1, 5 megapixel camera with flash and a 4" super AMOLED touch screen. Kevin Pereira and Chris Hardwick give a hands-on review of the Samsung Fascinate that's available for free with a contract.

What You Need To Know

  • The Samsung Fascinate is a bit longer and wider than the iPhone 4, and weighs only 4 ounces.
  • It has a 4" super AMOLED touch screen which looks sharp and vibrant.
  • The touch sensitive menu buttons on the bottom give it a sleek look.
  • The camera and flash on the back won't get obstructed by your grip.
  • The Fascinate runs on Android 2.1 OS and is another member of the Samsung Galaxy phone line.
  • The interface runs just as fast as any iPhone or Android phone.
  • It runs on a 1 GHz Hummingbird processor, so it boots apps like our G4 mobile app just fine.
  • The touch screen is responsive. You can pinch-and-zoom, flick through contacts and swipe with ease.
  • It also uses Samsung's proprietary "Touchwiz" interface which has a simple menu layout and offers widgets like a buddies list and social network aggregator.
  • Because Microsoft has a deal with Verizon, it comes with a Bing search toolbar, which is weird considering that it's on an Android/Google phone.
  • For those of you worried about using Adobe Flash, the Fascinate will get the 2.2 upgrade this year.
  • Along with the 5 megapixel camera and flash, its features are standard for most Android phones.
  • The camera quality is just okay outdoors and images look soft and grainy in low light and indoors.
  • The phone does come with different shooting modes like continuous shooting, cartoon filter and panoramic shots.
  • The phone shoots in 720p video and the quality looks good.
  • The video looks stabilized when moving and only has a touch of grain indoors.
  • There is no HDMI out.
  • The GPS was a little iffy and had some trouble finding our location.
  • You can also turn your phone into a mobile 3G hotspot for an extra $30 a month.

  • Free with a Verizon contract on Amazon.

  • 5 Seals of Approval out of 5. (How do we rate gadgets?)
  • The super AMOLED screen looks great, it has a sleek design and it's on Verizon, which is known for its excellent phone service. It's a great multimedia smartphone for the price.

Don t buy this phone if you want to be kept up-to-date with Google s Android OS. This phone has been stuck on 2.1 (in the U.S.) since Fall 2010 and no Froyo update is coming (2.2). Nor are Samsung/Verizon giving any useful information on an update, just months of empty promises. If you re cool using an old OS (Gingerbread 2.3 is already on a lot of phones) then you ll be fine with the Fascinate.

Man no smart phone maker is smart enough to put a simple little IR transmitter on the top of their phone... I mean come on Samsung I was holding out hope because you made TV's you would allow us to use your smart phones/tab as a universal remote... bugger but at least its now got a flash though the one we have here in Aus has a front facing camera instead :S so many varieties, why not put all the great features into one phone to rule them all. :) yea I went there.

Is it just me or do they give a 5 to way too many things? Whatever happened to nothing getting a 5? Isn't a 5 supposed to be a hypothetical perfect device?

YOU GUYS SUCK! It's not FREE on amazon it's 0.01 with a NEW 2 year account what you DIDN'T Mention is if you already ARE a Verizon customer it costs $99.99 with an individual plan and $149.99 with a family plan.

While i have issues with Verizon screwing over loyal customers the fact that you didn't MENTION THAT when you were reviewing it has me PISSED OFF! especially because the price what what got it a 5/5 score
