Canon EOS Rebel T2i DSLR Camera Review

Utilizing an 18 megapixel sensor and Digic 4 image processor, the Canon EOS Rebel T2i DSLR camera offers crystal clear pictures, HD video recording and more. Chris Hardwick and Carrie Keagan find out if this camera is worth the $750 price tag.

What You Need to Know

  • The Canon Rebel T2i is about .5” thicker than previous Rebel models, weighs a little over 1 lb. and the body's plastic case and rubber grip feel comfortable to hold
  • The menu buttons are large and easy to access with your thumb, although the radial dial on top doesn't rotate completely, so it can be annoying if you switch back and forth between settings
  • The 3” LCD screen looks bright and crisp, although you may need to adjust it in daylight
  • It also has a built-in flash and a hot shoe for an external flash
  • The T2i offers a lot of features for the beginner to mid-level consumer
  • Start up time is really quick and the auto focus works well
  • You have your standard shooting modes such as nighttime, landscape, and portrait, or you can just leave it on full auto and it will adjust the settings for you
  • For action shots, it can shoot continuously at 3.7 fps
  • You can shoot in different video formats such as 720p, 1080p and even 24p: the video looks sharp in daylight and in lowlight, there's no artifacting or digital noise
  • It also boasts an 18 megapixel sensor, so the picture quality is excellent
  • The auto focus works as intended and the images looked sharp, although outdoors, images get a little washed out
  • In low light you'll see some grain, but not much
  • Once again, it really depends on what settings you're using and the skill of the photographer

  • $750 (not including the lens)
  • For a DSLR at this price, it's some of the best HD video we've seen so far; it has better picture and video quality than the Samsung NX10 we reviewed yesterday and it's non-proprietary lens mount put it over the edge, since you have to use Samsung lenses with the NX10

You guys do understand that the number of mega-pixels doesn't make a photo any more high-quality, right? Mega-pixels have become a marketing tool because it's easy to market a higher number as being better to consumers as opposed to the truth. The truth being that what makes a better picture is the glass/lens really. If I put an expensive L lens on a 5 year old cannon DSLR, the picture will be a LOT better than the same picture from this new camera with it's standard kit lens.
