Shuttle may have a foothold in the small computer world, but they may have outdone themselves with the X350. Kevin Pereira and Morgan Webb review the sleek desktop PC that measures 1.5" thick with an Intel dual core processor, NVIDIA Ion2 graphics and built-in Wi-fi for $380.

What You Need To Know

  • This is one of the smallest, full-featured computers we've reviewed.
  • It measures about 6" tall standing on its side and 1.5" tall when laying down.
  • It has plenty of USB ports, an HDMI out and a card reader.
  • Even though it has the guts of an netbook, it utilizes features like a fan-less design and an optical drive, which work well.
  • The fan-less design makes it a lot quieter than a netbook since those usually have one fan constantly ramping up.
  • You only realize the need for an optical drive when you don't have one: it's nice to be able to play DVDs (1080p output) or install hardware.
  • It also has built-in Wi-fi, dual core processor and NVIDIA Ion graphics, which work just as fast as the fastest netbook.
  • The PCMark Vantage productivity benchmarks scored relatively high for a computer like this, which means running Flash, multiple browser windows and general office tasks should be quick.
  • It can also play games like Starcraft 2 and Team Fortress 2. We put all the settings on medium or low and they were playable.

Price

  • $380

Rating

  • 4 Seals of Approval out of 5 (How do we rate gadgets?)
  • We love the design, the features and performance, but it might be hard to justify since you'd only have to pay a little more for a netbook.

Its damn impressive it can play TF2, even if it is on low....

Still, for a desktop...eehhhh, just eek out the extra cash and get a real one

I don't understand the market for "net-top" PC's... It just seems to me that if you wanted a desktop, but didn't have the space for one, you would just get a tricked out high end laptop.... conveniently called a "desktop replacement"
