Motorola's Android phone is back with a new and improved look with the Droid 2, featuring a refined design, improved keyboard, 1 GHz processor and more. Kevin Pereira and Alison Haislip review the Droid 2 which sells for $100 plus a contract.

What You Need To Know

  • This phone is exactly the same size as the original Droid, which is a good thing.
  • It's still one of the thinnest phones on the market with a physical keyboard.
  • It's an ounce heavier than the iPhone but fits in your pocket just fine.
  • They also rounded the edges and expanded the keyboard all the way to the edges, which are improvements.
  • The keyboard is much better since they got rid of the directional pad, which took up a lot of real estate on the first Droid.
  • The keys are a little puffier, which makes it easier to type on.
  • The Droid 2 comes with Android 2.2. (Froyo), MOTORBLUR widgets and a 1 GHz processor.
  • The interface is almost as good as we want it to be.
  • We like Android 2.2 but we noticed that the touch screen is less sensitive after the Froyo update.
  • This seems to apply only to Motorola phones as HTC users haven't had a problem.
  • MOTOBLUR widgets like contact shortcuts or social feeds are well thought out and easily customizable.
  • Launching apps and games is just as fast as the iPhone 4 and HTC Evo.
  • It's double the processor speed than the original Droid, but we thought there would be more of a speed difference.
  • All standard features are there, including Adobe Flash support andn an improved camera.
  • The web browser loads Flash but it's still a bit slow if you're trying to watch videos or play Flash games.
  • They did add multi-touch support.
  • The camera has improved but not as dramatically as we'd like.
  • Photos are still a little muted and the video can only be recorded in 720x480 resolution (not HD).
  • The Droid has 16 GB of storage, which is expandable up to 40.

Price

  • $100 with a contract on Amazon.

Rating

  • 4 Seals of Approval out of 5. (How do we rate gadgets?)
  • This is the best phone with a full QWERTY keyboard that you can buy, especially for the price.

The Droid 2 is significantly better than any Galaxy S version because of the Galaxy S' awful pentile matrix screen, which is amazing at first...until you try to use it for reading text. The Droid 2's IPS LCD has far more accurate colors and much sharper text (reading small text on the Galaxy S is impossible). The Droid 2 cannot improve much over the first one because guess what, the original Droid is arguably still the 2nd or 3rd best Android phone ever made, having the exact same wicked LCD as the Droid 2. The Droid X's LCD is the same resolution yet has lower brightness, worse blacks, lower contrast, and less accurate colors. It's clearly inferior to the Droid 2. Bigger is not better, unless the resolution is higher.

The D2 has a lot more features then the env touch and the speakers are great in it too. The big thing for me is that the battery sucks on it but if you have a smartphone you are going to have to live with that anyways. I have a couple of chargers so I can make sure that my phone does not die.
A couple of good things about it:
    Linux Based
    Built in GPS
    Internet Browser works well
I like using the Swype feature for short messaging.
5 MP Camera albeit 8 would have been nicer
QWERTY Keyboard is descent on it too.
a lot of cool other features

    What I don't like:
    Battery
Verizon's Bloatware (You can get it off if you root the phone)
The Motorola blur is sometimes slow but you can get around that.
Before you buy one, see this http://www.Droid2Forum.net it's useful.

@zozero The droid 2 will rotate to landscape without opening the keyboard but it has to be checked for auto rotate, I have a Droid 2 and its awesome and I know how to use it fully! DROID DOES!!!

I own this phone and they failed to mention some cons. Some models have connectivity issues, the phone gets really hot with intensive use, the homescreen won't rotate to landscape without sliding out the keyboard, and the sliding mechanism isn't very good. Also, there are some bugs and crashes. Though this is because the OS is new I think. And yes it is really damn heavy.

Besides that, it is a fantastic smartphone and I highly recommend you get.....the r2d2 version. *darth vader* NOOOOOOooooooooooo why didn't I wait. :(

It's a good phone. Why?? Because it is the second model of the Droid. Which got a 5/5. I think the price alone @ 100.00 is better than any other smartphone out right now on the same calibur of a Droid or Iphone. At the end of the day if you have the first Droid, and you liked it, then you will like the Droid 2. No it's not the Incredible or Droid X, but it's a Droid for 100 bucks so who cares?? Because at this point, they all pretty much are the same freakin phone!!

@evilsock- I too was a little shocked that g4 of all networks failed to mention the R2-D2 limited edition model. That alone deserves a 5/5!!

Kevin: "We think this is the best phone with a full qwerty keyboard you can buy..."

How about the Samsung Epic 4G?

The Samsung Vibrant got a 5 out of 5 and this phone has a 5 rowed full qwerty keyboard, flash on camera, same superamoled screen, and front facing vga camera. Only down side is that the Epic is $250 with contract after mail in rebate but all the extra goodies are definitely worth it. I would say it's hands down better than the Droid 2.
