That would have been cool if they could do the fps camara Doom style with no z axis so you could walk around.

And Samus is having boyfriend troubles in this one? lol. M:OM, Metroid: "M"other; seems like menstral issues would be part of the story, but damn, is it really that bad?

I like to think most silent video game characters are extremely messed up inside and ready to eventually just explode all their emotions and become weak at a few points in their life even though they've done a lot of things that were considered brave and heroic. I bet Gorden Freeman has a lot of problems with making a committed relationship.

Im a guy and I agree on the sexist claims. I mean for a powerful real woman they sure her a porn-star type body.

For all that argue Abby is over-reacting to the new dramatic character change, your such hypocrites! If one day Microsoft decided to make Halo 4 and Master Chief came back with an Arnold Schwarzenegger body and acted like a little school girl, taking orders from everyone and crying when facing his enemies, you would be in rage too.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard on Nintendo Week that Other M is supposed to take place after Super Metroid on SNES, is that the case? And if I am right, wouldn't that scenario of how Samus meets Ridley make a little more sense?

I found the sexist observation in the review to be the most accurate part

lol...the G4tv male staff is as PC as they come so..like the Resident evil review or the overreaction to the MW2 Frag video. I don't see how having one of the :guys" review it would make a difference.

I think that Abbie choose to review the game within the context of both its legacy in-game and in the real world. While I may not necessarily agree with her review from a purely game-driven perspective (a review on gameplay, difficulty, etc.) as an Anthropology and gender studies graduate student, I have to say, much of what both Abbie wrote (and what was later said by Morgan) is practically a spot-on criticism of the game, in terms of its treatment of a heroic female character that is an icon within the industry. Samus, even for a guy like me, has always been a female character that I feel is universally empowering. She is intelligent, brave, and self-sufficient. The reason why this game seems to strike such a dissonant chord, is the fact that the story is mainly supposed to take place after the events of Super Metroid, a point in the timeline of Metroid where she is now veteran, fully established as one of the premier bounty hunters in the galaxy. Not using your power-ups because you need to prove you are worthy of recognition from a former superior clearly does not follow the legacy that Samus has already established. Such a jarring departure from this quality of the series, compounded with a troublesome control mechanic, may have simply exacerbated difference in this chapter to the point where the reviewer no longer feels it can be rightly placed with the other games in the series. In short, Abbie has the right to review the game lower that other reviews from equally reliable sources (IGN, 1UP, etc.) who have given the game much higher praise, based on the merits she deems to be vital to the series. Whether or not you, as a gamer, choose to listen to one, all, or none of the reviews and use them to decide whether you should buy the game or not, is entirely your decision. She is making a well-articulated argument, and I feel it should be respected.

I love how everyone is chalking this up to a gender-biased thing. It sounds like this depicts the males just as bad as Samus. I hope people actually listen to this talkabout and think about the reasons that this got trashed.

Of course fanboys & girls probably won't notice this, they just cry that a bad game got a bad review because it is Metroid, cause names totally relate to scores. Really, look at the video review if you aren't going to actually read the written. It looks awful and I completely agree with what they mentioned.

And my obligatory "Ugh, ANOTHER regenerating health system?! AND missiles?!"

Frankly I'm surprised that any other outlets DID give this a positive review.

we shot this talkabout early yesterday, long before the internet controversy. this wasn't made as a response to the commenters, it was just a companion to the review. we do talkabouts for most major game releases.

Wow a bit sensitive are we? The feedback must have been intense to garner such a rapid response from the G4 staff. Guys, there is no reason so circle the wagons on this one. As for me I took it (like I do ALL reviews) as simply a gaming guide so I could make up my own dam mind.

At first I thought Abbie judged the game a bit too harshly because of how the character was portrayed. Then I went back and re-read the review. lame voice over narrative, really stupid reason why she can't use her powers, and bad controls. I can't imagine trying to play the game like a classic nintendo controller, then having to switch to pointing it at the screen. that just sounds awful.

I haven't played the game so I can't say if I agree or not, but I totally respect her review.

    keep up the good work.
