As a general rule you shouldn't base a game off a single review anyway, i mean if someone told you scott pilgrim vs the world sucked would you not go see it if it had had your interest the whole lead up to it's releases, it has been stated 100 times this was abbie's opinion which may not in no way reflect yours, the only way to be sure is to get your hands on a copy and play it.
Thanks for your detailed input and feelings on the game, Abbie - your perspective is appreciated... I for one am not crazy how they made Samus' "femaleness" an issue in the game like this, it definitely cheapens the experience... what's next, making Link into a grizzled, gruff-talking muscle-bound roid-raging lunatic with a sword? :)Oh and Mat is looking more fit too than the last time I saw him on Feedback some while ago... good for you, Mat :)
I think it would be interesting if on the next feedback they were able to bring someone from another outlet on as a guest that thought higher of the game then Abbie did. Then they could discuss how their views on the game differ. Just a thought.
That's an absolute shame to hear that not one but two major developers dropped the ball in such a huge way as they said. If I could ask one question to you guys it'd be this. The way you describe it and the way Morgan Webb describes it is so scathing and cold, yet it managed to avoid getting rated as a 1. Does that mean there are really gems in the game that are good enough to bolster the score? I honestly don't know if it'd be worth it to find those few minutes in there if everything else about the game is going to make me hate the series.
Well the game is made by Team "boob physics = innovation!" ninja.... soooo ya know, you've got to expect a few things when it comes to sexism.
I do not understand how you can be angry about the regenerative health. Pretty much every game does that now, but just in a slightly different way. On top of that, I feel like you might of read a little too much into the characterization. Yes, I agree that the game made some odd moves in direction, and some may not be good but I highly doubt Nintendo would want to make ANYTHING sexist. We have seen Samus as a pin up cartoon at the end of every Metroid game. So, I don't know what that is all about as a non-sexualized character. And I think, the whole Adam layout was done because people complained about having to back track to pick up items. I agree, this does sound like a horrible DESIGN choice. But I do not think it can be sexist. I have not played the game yet, but I assure you I will...because I want to see it for myself. Pretty much no review can stop me. I am passionate about my games too. So yes, I wanted to put in my two cents just like you have....for 17 minutes.
I feel so so so bad for the Metroid franchise here. Samus is my favorite character and almost based on the story alone I do not like this game. Granted if someone is not a Metroid fan but loves action games, they will most likey enjoy the game a lot more. The game does have some cool moments like the takedowns or some of the boss fights aren't too bad. Although when playing it I got sick of the pointing at the screen with the wii-remote to fire missles really fast. The issues with the regenerating health and missles is a small but when everything else is so wrong with it they stand out more. Hopefully the next Metroid game will be good.P.S. No one should be able to tell Samus what to do ever.
Abbie, congrats on the professional review. Who specifically are going to be upset with the new found emotions of Samus? Maybe specifically "me" is what you should have said in the review. Ironically , I feel as though there may have been a little too much emotion interlaced into this review . The title for the review should have been "Abbie's biased opinion about what this game should have been" or " I am going to to attempt to throw off potential gamers new to the series because I don't like this game." I thought reviews were supposed to have some sort of subjectivity to them. I mean anyone can rant about how this game isn't like the one's twenty years ago. It bothers me how the media affects what we buy and that half of these people actually will not buy a product because of one's review. This review was embarrassing to watch and you're feminist views are blatantly obvious. I have a feeling there is some underlying issue with you that may carry over into....... say maybe game reviews? Job well done.
Man I really am thinking all the problems in Metroid:Other M are Team Ninja's fault. Maybe Nintendo only saw how the game played and then approved it before release? I am an amatuer game reviewer from Australia and I am really hoping my opinion of the game isn't swayed by the review from G4, but I always read their reviews to see what I may be in for. Finding out about how Samus is characterized does really upset me since she was one of my main reasons to proved to my mum when I was little that females can be video game heroes and not just rescued by plumbers or elves. Maybe Abbie is right and we should forget the game exists if it's really that bad. I have to wait until September 2 to find out myself but being a male gamer I may have to get my mum and sister to watch the 2 hour cutscene video you get for finishing the game to find out from them as a female gamer (mum) and non gamer (sister) how they feel about it.
I like that the review focused on the "Who is Samus?" aspect of the game, because that is what all the marketing I've seen has focused on. It is unfortunate that the story of Samus seems to be the weakest part of this game. Unlike most of the other commenters, I am glad Abbie Heppe reviewed this game. She has an excellentsense of what makes a game good, and has made he love of Metroid clear. I can't think of anyone who could have done it any better.The only thing which is unfortunate about this review- the fact that people refuse to give it the same level of respect they would if a man, specifically Mr. Sessler in this case, had said the exact same thing.
By the way, as a Nintendo fan, I've got to ask, how should I feel that other m's score is defended the same as Halo 3: ODST, I still can't see how you give a perfect score to a full price expansion map pack with a tacked on single player mode.
"Heaven has no rage like love to hatred turned / Nor hell a fury like a woman scorned by Metroid: Other M". Unleash the Fury Abbie!
Has Matt lost weight? And my two cents: if suddenly Master Chief or Marcus Fenix went all Edward Cullen, you'd all mess yourselves with rage. Nintendo really butchered her character.
The problem I see with the review is that it seems to be based more upon the story than the game itself. I don't follow the Metroid story much so maybe that's why I'm willing to give this a chance rather than staying away because of the 2 it received. I've always enjoyed Team Ninja games and when this was announced, I was stoked. From what I've read though, the whole unable to use her powers thing doesnt hit me as such a big deal. What fun would it be to have all your equipment from the start? It's more or less the same thing as having to find them like in the previous games. The idea is frowned upon because of the aspect of her not willing to use her powers until the commander lets her. From what I remember, they had deep respect for each other. As far as the crying and such goes, I think it's an awesome idea to finally get into Samus as a HUMAN instead of this unbreakable tank that she's been portrayed as. I haven't played the game so I cant really say much about it, but hear me out. Maybe the scenes are to make us think. One of the gripes I hear is that she has defeated Ripley several times before with no problems before, yet here she is vulnerable and weak . The game from the start seemed to have this lonely feeling about it. Perhaps Samus is overwhelmed by having to deal with him so much, just a never ending cycle of violence and despair.I'm glad Nintendo decided to let one of their iconic characters to be fleshed out and be looked at as "Normal" with real emotions. I'm actually looking forward to picking this up myself and play it now that I think about it. It's good to see a franchise evolve from the basic shoot this to save that to something that makes you think about the character itself. From all this talk going on, it seems like Nintendo and Team Ninja succeeded at that.
Huh, maybe if the jiggle physics were better Abbie would've given it a higher score.(Third very insensitve comment of the week)
at least Samus doesnt use sex as a weapon like Lara Croft.so many deceitful memories...from hell's heart, i stab at thee.
Team Abbie>Team Untendo
to understand what they were thinking, you should go read the Iwata asks segment on Nintendo's site, I figure you at g4 would look into things like that but it seems you never check the nintendo site for any information
I'll play it anyway....c'mon guys it's a Metroid game after all!!=)
