MGS4 Hands Down the best ending to a game I have ever played.
Why does the picture of Adam have Bowser horns? Is it praising or criticizing the ending in SMG2? Or is it just unrelated all together?
That's really crazy; I just started re-playing Mass Effect 2 two days ago. The ending for that was so epic, so emotional and just so powerful. That stands as one of my favorite games of all time, mostly for the fact that you really feel like a hero in the end. It all comes together beautifully and there's a sense of accomplishment if you save most of your team, or horrible guilt combined with a bittersweet victory if you lose everyone. It triggers such a profound response from the player that is seen in very few games.
I really agree with endings just completely killing a game for me. I was one of the late bandwagoneers for Dragon Age: Origins (Bought it and all DLC just 3 months ago), and I have to say that when I finished Origins, I was done. I didn't care to continue, nor did I care to even attempt another play through. I guess I just expected there to be more than a small CGI and then a bunch of words. I understand that there are a ton of possible endings, but just a small CGI for each outcome, or even a picture of the event, would have been better than what it was given.I also can't say I was happy with the ending to Fallout 3. I loved the game, and I still to this day replay it all the time, but it it wasn't for the DLC switch I probably wouldn't have continued on the path I have.
Food for thought. I'm trying to think of games with endings I've thought were exceptional...off the top of my head I liked Read Dead Redemption's; for one thing, it really felt like they put a lot of thought and consideration into it.Adam, you should make a small feature of the game endings that you think were particularly good, or had some important quality to them, I'd be interested know.
I agree Adam that developers should invest more time in the ending. But from a marketing stand point it doesn't make sense, you want to make sure the beginning of the game is very strong so you can pull them in. And no one is going to preview the ending before the game comes out. So I doubt it will change. The only companies that are able to make sure they have a strong ending are the ones like Blizzard who set there own schedule because they have been so successful in the past.Speaking of Blizzard, I just laugh to myself imagining activision going up to Blizzard and asking when SC2 was going to come out or the next WoW expansion, and they don't give them a straight answer either and they accept it lol

Mass Effect 2 will suck you in like a black hole.
Red Dead Redemption's build up to the ending is great. From the first ride into Mexico and the family missions and to the great songs was flawlessly executed. The ending to that game was both sad and satisfying at the same time.
Another great episode of Feedback.

KotOR 2's ending completely killed the game for me. They would have been better off with NES Pro Wrestling's ending, "A winner is you" - that was far more satisfying than KotOR 2's.
Adam I love that you reviewed mass effect 1-2. It makes me cry when I play the game because of the story and your relashinship with your characters. You have to play the DLC. And please give us some info on the new DLC coming out about the shadow broker. because that is something all of us includeing you would really want to know about.
Twilight Princess had a beast ending, best ending in my opinion.
Frankly I personally don't really feel that having an oh so epic ending is what really makes your jaw drop but more the feeling that you made an effect on what happened and that the ending had that same level of rythm and storytelling that kept you going for the last 10 to 30 or so hours you put in to getting there. In that sense I would say that Mass Effects 1 and 2 don't necessarily set a bar because their bar is on a different rack entirely. As it is, for both of these games the endings directly correlate to everything you chose to do up until that moment, making what you did actually what you wanted to do, therefore making it more personal and more dramatic for the viewer. In this sense it can be seen as great in more peoples eyes, however at the same time those other games aren't necessarily worse off just because they didn't have the character jumping from one exploding spaces ship to the next like hopscotch and all the while simultaneously curing cancer and saving kittens and killing nazis all at the same time. Much was the case with God of War 3, while the ending didn't have you fighting a giant Zeus like the beginning where you fought Poseidon it still has the weight of something great not only because of the set pieces you fight through but also as a result of the story. In truth it would be ill-fitted to have Kratos kill (and not just fight like in GOW2) Zeus (his father) in some giant form because it is a completely personal matter, this is his father and Kratos has gone to such lengths to finally come to this moment that to swing a sword on a chain from 80 feet away isn't gonna cut it, it has to be done by his bare hands.Admittedly, I didn't have a PS3 or a friend with one to let me play this game and admittedly I feel like I missed out a bit but at the same time I wanted to see this story get finished and so found some clips online just so that I could experience the story. And as far as this correlation between how an ending is made to be epic I really don't see it as being a necessity of scale but rather story and what feels right and is viceral enough to grab the players attention, whether it is shooting the giant Human Reaper until it falls to oblivion or beating the crap out of your Father Zeus until he becomes nothing but a red smear on the ground. Endings are really about closure and won't necessarily have the weight and control you experienced leading up to them and in truth have to rely solely on story because eventually you gotta put the controller down.Sorry if this got to rambling territory, if anyone wants to reply or tell me to stfu please do so politely cause I'd like to keep a discussion going if others are interested.
After video, even though our opinions differ on Bioshock 2 endings, I completely agree. Endings make terrific games. I mean the way I like games to end is death just because it gives me the feeling like I haven't just played this tale to the end but I've played this LIFE to the end.
Before video. By the title I'd say I agree with Adam. In fact I have just completed the game that they show case on the left of Adam, Bioshock 2 and may I say the ending holds it's place as my favorite ending in a game. FYI I got the sad ending. It was just the music and the part where you see Rapture as you rise that just captures me.

The ending to Half-Life 2 was terrible. I slaved over that game for 2 weeks (on and off) and at the end just got a terrible, twilight zone style ending. Almost made playing the game pointless.
