When I initial heard about the Orange Box I thought Portal sounded like another tedious puzzle game. I lothe puzzle games. But I recently bought Orange Box for $18 used, and thought, what the hey I will try it out. I love the game. Finished the advanced maps and am still trying to capture gold in a few of the stages. It is a great game. With all that in mind though, I would have rather seen Valve put out another Orange Box, with multiple games again, that have a stand alone Portal game. The time it takes to get thru all the maps in Portal is just about perfect, and if you want to do more you can. If a full game of Portal is longer I think it would border on the repetitive, but it if is only as long as the first one, then I do not think people will be happy paying full game price for it.
I don't want to sound harsh, but this type of outlook irritates me to no end. Go and take a look at the lineup for Natal (Sorry, Kinect), the games on XBLA, and every other Wii game ever made, and tell me with a straight face that we still need to cater more to the casual demographic.
I haven't played portal so I can't say for sure, but if it was your first game since NES, you must have been one hell of a NES gamer. That seems like an unbelievable leap to me. I know puzzle games are the best way to get casuals into gaming, but I can hardly get them to figure out anything more than seek and find games.
There is something to be said for the necessity of pacing in game. While Portal is certainly a puzzle game, and should be challenge to the player, it is up the developers to not make it too hard. The original portal was so enjoyable not necessarily because the puzzles were hard, but because the puzzles "seemed" hard. You are thrown into a room with no idea on how to get through the puzzle, but in reality the game had constructed the level so you would "realize" how to solve the puzzle. Considering how talented Valve is we should not really be worried about the pacing of Portal 2. However, if the game is too hard, it detracts from both the narrative experience of the game, and the satisfaction of feeling that you had solved a difficult puzzle.
I think the real question is "Do you think Portal will scare off gamers based on it's complexity?" I do not believe casual gamers is the proper question because it assumes that all hardcore gamers are of a higher intelligence.
Totally psyched that Valve is adding so many new features to this sequel.Portal was far too short, and easy, though very enjoyable.
i honestly dont think it would be too challenging for gamers . portal (esp the last 3 testchambers) is really just an exercise in logic and non linear thinking. In that respect, nearly anyone can pick up portal one and, if it builds on this respect, Portal 2 .
Not EVERY game has to be crap shovelware aimed to the idiots who can't see the different between a PS3 or an Xbox 360 game case.WE need some love too!
I will be picking this one up. But I actually felt this way when I saw the trailers for this game. I was like "Really? I never would have thought of that. Even in Portal 1 I had to subject to youtube on how to complete some of the levels. But either way I enjoyed the game & I am excited for this one. It seems like all the great games come out early next year lol

Who cares about casual gamers? They can go play crap shovelware on the Wii.(not that there are not good games on the Wii) But seriously, why would any developer design games for the casual market when there is so much more money to be made with hardcore gamers...especially Valve. They won't hold back! In Valve we trust!
Sure the new mechanics in Portal 2 will only strive on the basic portal aspect and take the challenging game-play to newer heights, but I for one believe that the guys over at Valve know full well to keep the game challenging, but not frustrating. They know how, and when to keep the games in check and balanced on a level of pure enjoyment.
Bring it on. The first one had a steep learning curve with its physics but eventually you get the hang of it :)
I think we underestimate Valve's ability to make great games. I would be willing to bet anything that there is a learning curve similar to the first one where it starts out being very accessible and simple, and then ramps up to epic but very difficult. What they have demo'd so far is intimidating but very exciting for anyone who enjoyed the original portal, and I am sure that is why Valve is showing those puzzles off. I really doubt , however, that the game doesn't gradually build the player up so that by that point in the game, the puzzle is difficult and fun but not impossible.

I'm going to buy it because I'm a stupid fan boy, but still looks fun either way, I'm wondering too if I'm going to be able to get through it all on my own without checking up on walkthroughs or something. Because I don't know if I'm smart enough either... D:D (idk wat face too put, so imma confuddlez u pplz)
This game looks like fun but I can't help but feel I'm not smart enough to play it... :(
