Yamaha isn't new to the soundbar business, and their latest, the YSP-4100, could be near perfection. Kevin Pereira and Alison Haislip review the digital sound projector with its 4 HDMI inputs, wireless subwoofer connection and more for $1,400.

What You Need to Know

  • The device is 3.5’ long, and only 3.5” thick
  • It’s much heavier than it looks
  • Setup is easy, literally ready to go right out of the box with no wires at all
  • There are four HDMI inputs, which should be more than enough for any devices you own
  • Overall, it’s a nice looking sound bar
  • You can easily connect a SIRIUS radio or an iPod to this device, but obviously the main feature is the virtual surround sound using their IntelliBeam technology
  • The IntelliBeam is easy to set up, you just have to plug in the auto calibration microphone, leave the room, and it determines how to get the best sound quality
  • The system bounces beams of audio around the room in an attempt to make it surround, occasionally you hear something behind you, but mainly it falls short and instead just fills the room with sound
  • Plus, another feature was an on screen menu, which most of these systems lack; It looks like an old VCR display, but it's easier than trying to navigate with the built in LCD
  • The highs and mids sounded great and were well balanced, but the lows weren't robust enough and it took away from the overall experience
  • We did hook up a wireless subwoofer they sent us, which costs an additional $300 and vastly improved the quality and really filled out what was missing
  • Overall, it sounds a lot better than any other sound bar out there, but actual 5. 1 systems are just as good and slightly cheaper

Price

  • $1,400
  • If you want a giant speaker that fills your room with sound then this might be for you, although we’d definitely recommend picking up the additional sub for $300

The price of the sub could give me a Z5500 5.1 Surround S to go with my PS3.
Actually I do have a Z5500 which is great!
