Motorola Backflip Phone Review

The flip phone could be back with the Motorola Backflip. Kevin Pereira and Olivia Munn review its 3.1" touch screen, full keyboard, Android OS and reverse hinge mechanism which comes free with a contract.

What You Need to Know

  • The phone is only .6” thick
  • It has a 3.1” touch screen
  • It runs Android 1.5, which can be upgraded to 2.1
  • There’s a full QWERTY keyboard on the back of the phone
  • The idea of flipping your screen backwards takes a little getting used to
  • The overall feel of the phone falls on the cheap side, especially the keyboard, which feels like low grade plastic and lacks any real definition of the keys
  • Motoblur  takes all of your social networking accounts and e-mail addresses and allows you to view real time updates right on your home screen; it works to a degree, but isn't very robust
  • The screen itself is fine for the most part, but the phone is a little on the laggy side, like when taking a picture and messaging it
  • Also, the Backflip includes a touchpad on the back of the screen called the Backtrack, which for the most part, is useless; it's located where your fingers naturally rest while typing, causing undesired selections at times
  • You can fold the screen to table-top mode for browsing the net and watching videos
  • The phone has a 5 megapixel camera, the Android Market, and web browsing (no Flash)
  • The camera, while taking nice pictures, was a little laggy, and occasionally caused itself to force close; at one point the entire phone restarted itself
  • Android Market works like you'd expect, as always, giving you access to thousands of apps
  • Web browsing was not the best on the small screen, especially because the default browser lacks any pinch-to-zoom features
  • Overall, this phone is not our favorite of the recent Androids we've seen

Starting to think that the reviews are just another way for Olivia Munn to continue to look like an idiot.

@whyte_boi_901-If you want the best smart phone out but you don't want the iphone, the the best phone to get will be a Droid through Verizon!! It pretty much does everything an Iphone can do, minus the itunes store, but the droid Marketplace is just as good. Plus unlike the questionable service through AT&T that you hear everyone complain about, Verizon actually has a really reliable network. So I say go with the Droid.

I've said it a thousand times -- MotoBLUR is a cancer on your cell phone. I have a Cliq, thought having Blur was a great idea on paper, but after having it for some five months I can't stand it. It drains battery, it slows down the phone and, worst of all, it throws in ALL your Facebook, Twitter, etc. contacts into your Contacts folder -- not in separate "Facebook" or "Twitter" folders, but the main folder. This wouldn't be a big problem if there were an option to remove them or not allow them from being filed, but there isn't.

It's a damn shame, too, since the Motorola hardware with the Cliq and Backflip isn't too bad -- but MotoBLUR is flippin' useless.

@gadget freak: I think they gave "HTC HD2 3/5", but I'm not that affected by the rating ,I'm using iPhone, really not interested in other phones out there.

AOTS you have lost all credibility in rating gadgets. Giving the Motorola Backflip a 3/5 while you give the HTC HD2 a 2/5. Besides the HTC HD2 not being upgradable to Windows Phone 7 it is a top of the line phone. The Backflip is a feature phone in comparison. Epic Fail on this one AOTS!
