That was awesome, it was intelligent, funny, and made me think of how dependent we are on technology. It would be awesome if G4 could get this guy to come on one of the shows and talk more.

All of you just lost The Game

bi0raid, the point was the platforms would diverge, so the points that Dr. Pepper give you would probably only be usable for Dr. Pepper related items. The points for practicing piano would go towards arts grants for secondary schooling, much as performance grants and scholarships work today. The fact that you have disposable technology everywhere does not mean that those pieces of technology would be made by the same manufacturer. Perhaps Kellogs boxes use Ibm micro-controllers while Pepsi cans and boxes use Motorolla technology. In this scenario it would be easy to see a competition over affordability, lifespan on a charge, size of the hardware, connectivity, and ease of programming. Much as we see with the smart phones today.
Just because the information collected by so many sources would be simular in nature does not mean a centralization of information. It is much easier to envision the collected information being closely guarded by the companies collecting that information. It is easy to see the corn flakes box recording information for Kellogs' use only. Although that information may be sold to other companies and agencies. On a smaller scale this is already happening. When you use google, what you search for and what links you click on from that search are used to determine search results as well as google advertising. Your email on list serves or user accounts may be sold to internet marketing companies. Just because information exists or is collected/generated on mass does not mean that it is not made for specific use by specific agents.
And Black_Bob I don't think Prof. Schell ever refers to this vision as a utopia. I think he is pretty clear that this is merely the future he sees coming down the road. I never heard any positive or negative value from him on this scenario. I did however hear Prof. Schells ask if this vision had room for social engineering. If points are rewarded for good behavior, would that create enough incentive to create the good behavior? Or would there be as Flight_Eagle pointed out the same number of counter culture rebels as there are today? Would the strive for something "real" that Prof. Schells mentioned earlier only become stronger to the point of people unplugging or pulling out of the point incentive game?
I am sure that you could write many papers and small books in many scholastic journals on the technology, practicality, incentives, and ethics of this vision. But my only question after watching this speech for a second time, and reading these comments is a simple one. If this is something is coming in one form or an other, can it be used to promote a more connected society that continues to strive for moral evolution? Or does this system lack that power, only existing to be used to create sheep that jump through hoops both seen and unseen? Now that is a question that would get me to read philosophy journals again.

OMG god wow this was one of the funniest and most intelligent thing I have heard in a long while. My mind is blown.

Big red maybe you skipped chapter 2 the part about technological evolution. I just thought their views were similar on the integration of technology into nontraditional forms such as clothing, food, tattoo, etc. It was just the 1st thing that came to mind, of course a 400 page book is gonna be a little deeper, and broader in scope than a sweet 25 minute powerpoint.
bi0raid
i just browsed through 3 pages of these comments. you people are morons. mind blowing? come on.
bi0raid
excellent presentation. he is a talented speaker. however, what he had to say was mainly BS. his whole point of converging/diverging technology was just a setup for the ipad joke. doesn't his idea of points/senors/cameras/screens everywhere on everything disprove his convergence law?
good presentation, very entertaining, but not very realistic. or even logical

My mind = blown into nonexistance. What does Jesse Schell call his little eutopia? Why cant my college profs be like this?

This reminds me of what the movie Zeitgeist warned me of...

I have watched many presentations from different fields but this one kept me engaged, interested and gave me multiple "AHA" moments. I truly agree with him about the future of technology and gaming being involved in all functions of life and I hope his prediction of it persuading people to live better lives becomes true.
Dirtyj78
How many points do I get for watching the whole thing?
great speech

What if this becomes true, it could be one of the best crime deterrents ever conceived. Though the amount of power and control over our lives this would give the government and companies would be too great.

Dude.. this guy just blew my mind...
And while he was talking, this blew my mind more... what if those points were your money? You would work harder to get more money for more things, be a better person for bonus points, lose points for crimes committed, so on and so forth. It would be better encouragement against crime and poverty rates would go down. Now morals and things like religion would have to stay OUT of it.
My god...
But... there will always be the rebels, who see it as wrong, a crime against freedom and nature...
But then nature is about evolution... and this is evolution...
Evolution is real.
Isn't it?

Our lives one big Game? Geez, I already sat through Gamer. I don't need my life to be anymore full of crap than it already is.
Sleeplessmonkey
he has the smartest comment on the iPad i have yet to hear

Schnell is a beast. Its like big brother only scarier because its not the government, and we would enjoy being controled because its a subtle, slow process. It will become just an average part of the world by the time our children our all grown...

Shakespeare said it best "All the worlds a stage, and all the men and women merely players." Life is already a glorified rpg, an incredibly lame one for most people. If only we had infinite lives and autosaves we would all be SUPER NINJA ASTROSAURS who spend all day killing things, and saving the world....but there's a good chance we only get one. So I guess accounting is almost as cool...right?
