Sess -- I've said it before and I'll say it again. The whole idea of a grading system for video games is antiquated. It's time for G4 to be an industry leader and ditch the grading system and stick with just your narrative (If you really feel strongly about warning those of the real CRAP out there maybe a simple 'thumbs down').

We see it all the time in forums, gamers see game grade and immediately become enraged or boast vindication. WHY? As a society we place way too much value onto grades. And because of this many 'fanboys' can't see past the grade to read why the 'grader' felt that specfic grade was given. Today, the vast majority of video games are creative works of art and, being art, grading is subjective and is based on one's opinion. (It's not like the days of Pac-Man.) Today, there is a finer line between a 4 and 5 star or a B+ and an A- today, than just 2 years ago. The industry has matured, we need a more mature grading system; not with stars, numbers or letters, just give us words. Deludge us with adjectives describing your experience in the game.

Take the lead, show the industry it can be done.

Everyone keeps calling this a clone of God of War, but God of War was just a clone of DMC and NG, sure different enough, but really, all the hack and slash actions games really feel the same, melee combos and an a ranged element and a skill tree.

About 5 hrs into Dante and havin a blast with it. havnt play GoW, always wanted to dont have a PS3 so im thrilled to have a game similar to it. I think scoring a game out of 5 only limits your range for me its a 8.5 / 10

ya see with me it doesn't matter if a game is a "clone" or is really similar to another game, as long as that "clone" is fun, i wouldn't mind more clones of games i love at all either if we had a fable clone for example i would love to play it and when it came down to it i would take nothing away from that game because it was a clone. not all games can be different but as long as its good then its more than enough for me.

So in the end all im really saying is clones are a good thing as long as the clone is a good game.

I would prefer that games be reviewed on their own merits, but Adam makes a good point. Even I can't help but draw comparisons when I play games. Game reviewers play way more games than I do, so they'll have much more content to draw comparisons from.

The problem I have is that when the comparisons come up, it almost always sounds as though the game being reviewed is never going to be as good as the game it's being compared to. As a culture, we respect originals and abhor copycats. The use of the word "clone" may not be derogatory, but it implies that someone just took one game and changed the name so they can sell it again.

It implies that if someone where to play both games without knowing which one came out first, he or she would have the same opinion of the two of them. That's not what I'm seeing when I browse message boards. There are people who like Saints Row more than GTA. There are people who'd rather play World at War over Modern Warfare. I guarantee you there will be people who will put down God or War to play Dante's Inferno.

Since, as a culture, we don't like copycats, the people who prefer the clones get called out on it for no good reason. I had a friend insist I buy GTA4 because he saw me playing Saints Row. I have to say I didn't enjoy Liberty City as much as I enjoyed Stillwater. It was still fun, but I didn't need the attitude. I don't need a bunch of people telling me that I have to respect the GTA franchise because it came first. I have a lot of respect for it, I just prefer to play the clone.

I'll let it be though. I just wish there wasn't such a stigma attached to a game being a clone. I'm just as tired as Adam on the issue. Also, I hate how long my posts are.

Example of a good stand alone clone game: Dead Space A.K.A. Resident Evil 4 in space!

Wow, that was amazing timing! Right around 4:34 when Adam says "The comparison is kinda being shoved in your face," something happens in the Dante's Inferno game behind him that really makes his comment, well, pop. That was awesome.

I miss coming to G4. I've made a lot of friends in the comment section. I think I moved on at the right time. It's insane that you guys have to all of these videos to comfort the whiners that have gathered on this site when you mention God of War.

Just scanning like 3 months of news that I have missed, this site is looking very one sided. Patrick gave his opinion on a game that (I'm guessing) a lot of people who don't own a PS3 had high hopes and his followers turned on him because he didn't give the score that they were looking for.

I like how calm the site has become, but I wish that it was just a little more neutral.

"...the whole idea of cloning is kinda odd since games like Shadow Complex get high scores despite the obvious influences yet games like Dante or Darksiders get low scores because of its obvious influences but all 3 games are fun,..."

Nice quote from Mystr_E and so true. One clone good and another is bad? I found all the games mentioned to be fun. That's what I rate, Fun, Play-control, Interesting story, Graphics that fit the game, and Depth.

And notice that I could care less if it copies another game. How many FPS are there? How many drivin games ae there? How many burger joints are there. How many steak houses are there?

When did we start rating things on how many of the same thing is out there? Only on the internet.

Nice rebuttal to some of the comments from previous games.

What I would like to know is if so many games borrow from previous ideas from games, then what can a game stand out in the market today?
