ur2ez2me: "90% review based on originality.10% based on whether the game is fun or not."BRAVO!!Games used to be rated by Fun, Graphics, Story, and Play-control. Originality was an extra reason to like a game and NOT the main reason to hate a game.
Im not getting the soup part
90% review based on originality.10% based on whether the game is fun or not. sad times....
I think both Patrick and Adam are putting too high a value on originality. Good is good. My two favorite games are Fallout 3 and Borderlands. If a reviewer says a game is "just like Borderlands" I'm going out and buying it. By the way, both of these games are simply mashups of RPGs and FPSs. So does that make for originality? Everything feeds off what has come before, there is nothing new under the sun (a 3,000 year old quote from the Bible). If you make a game as good as God of War, then in my opinion that makes it a 5 out of 5 as well.
I've seen the reviews from all the major gaming sites on Dante's Inferno. I read the comments people give on the editors' reviews. I hear everything from "Dantes Inferno is a God of War clone" to "stop comparing every action/adventure game to God of War". When the subject of originality is brought up, it not only lends itself to video games but every other medium out there. The thing is many people out there aren't smart enough to see things from many angles. For example, one individual could argue they aren't innovating on gameplay by using things such as Quick time events. While someone could counter that by saying, QTE's are the only way to make cinematics finishing moves, and that a more complex control input might take away the cinematic visuals and overall appeal (if you were able to control the camera movement). So then in a situation like this it becomes more about coming up with ideas that you can use, while still retaining balance and a slew of other things that get tied in. Also at times, it not just about seeing one aspect of a game or another but a combination of said elements. Ultimately, what it comes down to is how you want to see the game, since there is no "see the game for what it is" but rather a "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" approach, like anything in life. Finally I wan't to mention that only the developers know (when they were creating the game) how original it felt to them as they designed the gameplay, art and concepts. As well as what they decided to put in the final product.
Scoring out of 5 is way to limited and leading to peoples reactions. Hey patrick had you scored it outa 10 what would you have gave it ?
I understand why it gets a 3, however it is a good if not great game, and yes if you dont happen to own a PS2 or PS3 this game is a good decision. have no god of war? get dante's inferno, it satisfies the thirst.... FOR BLOOOD!
I'm still puzzled by Patrick opinion on the game And I have one question. If God of War brings nothing dynamically new to the genre other fighting on a titan and a few new weapons and updated graphics; Will you give it a 5 out of 5? Does God Of War sail on the merits of Predecessors because it shares the same brand or will you hold it to the same standard you held Dante Inferno. I know Patrick is a Fan of GoW franchise And I wonder what minor tweaks would have merited Dante's Inferno a 4.
@ Dragn_age_fanI don't know about pitchforks but if Abbie did the Darksiders review she should find something else at G4 to do. Sorry, but that review was off. And while I know just because people complain that others will just say they are whiners, but I think the number of people says something. Bad Reviewer. The good news though is that the staff at G4 is pretty smart and I bet they see the problems with the Darksiders review as well.Whatever, at least Patrick knows how to review games and what games are about.
Thank you SO Much for the comment on this being a good game to pick up for 360 owners who haven't had access and won't have access to God of War!! In all of the written review this was the one thing I really wasn't sure about, but wanted to know. I really enjoyed the review, but now knowing that this is where you were standing in the written reviews context I'll defiantly be picking this up.
Thanks Patrick! Your score was what it was. Sure I think it deserves a 4, but I didn't own a PS3 until recently and really after playing GOW for the first time I still enjoy Dante very much. Also, yes being good is harder and the game depicted that perfectly.NOW, what I'd like to see is someone defending giving Draksiders a 2. Sorry but that person does not play games for fun, but just to critisize.I prefer games to be reviwed by fellow gamers (Adam, Morgan, Patrick), and not critics who don't know that games are for having fun. Please G4TV, do not let the person who reviewed Darksiders ever review another game again. Just hire another "gamer" to help with reviews.
You brave soul, lol!Good job Patrick, I'll still be picking up this game.
When I saw the 3/5, I was ready to say a lot of things. Like I was ready to go crazzy. After I actually read the whole review I understood the rating. I do hate when games are compare to other games. I get why they are, but I feel that it isn't fair to the developers when that happens. Still good review, and good discussion.
im 4 circles in... i love it!!! IT does feel like GOW but theres something about this guy maybe its cos he doesnt look as ba as kratos does given he has a cross stiched n2 his chest... It feels more like a struggle not like ur equal 2 ur enemys. Hack and slash games are going 2 always be GOW based its simply what works... Not saying theres no better way it should be done but i wanna look back to the hevenly sword review, if nything was a copy it was but i have 2 say 1 of my top 20 games for any system. IF games get demerited for being similar please explain 2 me how almost all fps's get either a 4 or 5 almost every1 is virtually the same... Half the time same story.
This was well needed; and well done. Many people seem Peeved about the 3/5 score yet may have not read other reviews like the GameTrailers Review of 6.8 or the GameSpot Review of 6.5. There are other reviews that tell it much worse. However just because IGN gave it a 8.5 people think it deserves a great score overall by all media outlets. I played this for about 3 hours today and it's really good it's far from Great but it's really good. Instead of complaining of a bad review rent it and see for yourself. A "demo" does not give the full interpretation of a game.
My problem is this: If you have never played any of the GoW games then how good is this game? Does that make the game better for that player? I, for one, disliked the first GoW so much that I returned it a week later (GoW Collection).
Admittedly slightly off topic, but when are you guys gonna add these talkabouts to the g4tv web shows podcast? I really like listening to this stuff and that's so convenient that the lazy guy inside me is almost angered when I realize I have to come to the webpage. On Dante's: I was never so happy as when I read your review simply because I could print it out and tell other people to shut up. I had this called as an inferior GOW product and someone had it in their head that it was a GOW killer. From what I was able to discern from the demo (admittedly not much) you're right on and I'm happy that you guys are able to tell the trolls to burn in hell.
I don't think the backlash from people for the review for Dante's Inferno is as bad as Darksiders' review. Having read Patrick's review and reviews from other sites, I think I'll buy DI when it's half-priced. Also with GOW3 being a month away, it's going to satisfy my hack-slash needs. I like the Talkabouts segment, as gives us more depth about the review, please feature it more. Maybe it's a bit late but like with Patrick it would be nice to see Abbie talk about her Darksiders' review. As I was a bit confused on the rating. I just need clarification so don't think I'm one of those angry people carrying pitch forks and calling her to be fired. Also Adam, you keep mentioning d#%k soup a lot. I'm worried it's getting to your mind and you'll be trading recipes with McGreedy or whatever his name is. Kidding!
I expected as much from the game, and I don't disagree with your score at all. I think the problem is that the rating system you guys have is too narrow. If you would have said 3.5 out of 5 people might not have been so angry. I think the same thing goes for games like Bioshock 2 and Assassin's Creed 2, both games that people expected to get a 5 but instead got a 4. If you had the rating system a bit more flexible it might help a little....but that's just my theory.
I think a 3 is a good score and it still sounded like a fun game. I will most likely pick up Dante's Inferno later on down road during the summer drought since I can't buy every game on the shelf.
