He did say of \"recent\" times. From the PC-Gamer stand point, I did enjoy COD and DOOM.

However, I have always been more of a Mechwarrior fan until microsoft dummed it out and stopped producing it. Does mechwarrior count? It is a type of FPS ... but in a mech....

I dont have a XBOX ... so I can not comment on HALO...

Here's my choices of BEST FPS shooters ive played..

    1. COD SERIES!! - started out with ww2 shooters, but it got old for me so i would say and nominate, COD 4 and MODERN WARFARE 2!!

    2. R6 VEGAS 1 and 2

    3. GHOST RECON SERIES- the 3rd person version was my favorite one of all, and the upcoming version, G- RECON PREDATOR will go back to it's full FPS view.

    4. RESISTANCE: FOM- i liked the first one but the 2nd one was ok

    5. BATTLEFIELD BC- gotta love the vehicles and destructible cover.

Halo is undoubtedly one of the greatest shooters of all time. It made FPS games mainstream. Become the Star Wars of video games- spread into comics, spawned a massive cult following, possibly getting a movie. Saved the Xbox from failure (but nothing could save the Xbox 360). Now Bungie's website is basically HaloTube (the flaming gets redirected to the forums, which are constantly active). Halo 3's Theater and Forge modes, in addition to file sharing, are terrific and make you wish that every game had such robust features.

Come one people, if we are counting the best shooters of all time, you have to include Golden Eye for the N64. Even though the series never got to be any good, Golden Eye was a breakthrough for console games. It was a one of a kind experience back in the days, and so many people spent hours playing with buddies over and over. Due to the change it caused over the console gaming world, Golden Eye deserves a spot in the top 5 of all time.

Look Team Fortress definatly belongs in the countdown not enough PC gamers anymore imo.
Count down for me personally is
    1. Team Fortress 2
    2. CS:S
    3. Battlefield 2
    4 UT 3 Black
5 MW2- only console game I really play
Im big on online shooters so that is why i prefer the pc as my platform for shooters like Tf2 and Cs.

    Honorable Mention: The Original Halo
I feel this deserves an honorable mention because this was the first shooter I really got into and was responsible for introducing a lot of us "console peasants" (as my friend calls them) to the FPS genre. It paved the way for other FPS series to make the leap from PC to platform. Unfortunately, it tripped over it's own two feet and suffocated in said pavement with it's second installment, Halo 2. So it is also credited with the reason I started looking into other series. "Go Team" I suppose...

    5. DOOM I&II
This Was the game that brought me back to shooters. I played tons of DOOM I on the 360 with my family and friends, then I played MORE on the PC in DOOM II. A must play for and FPS fan. Learn your roots!

    4. Rainbow Six: Vegas series
The cover mechanism is fun and the weapons selection is playful and probably one of the biggest until MW2 came along. The real problem that's keeping this game from sitting higher on this list is it's horrible AI that never fails to embarrass the 21st Century of gaming. Still loads of fun.

    3. Half Life series
This series surprised so many when they bought it expecting a FPS and what they got was a man and his story that would become a landmark of gaming. To this day a lot of Half Life's innovations can be seen in almost every title.

    2. CONTRA
There is no other game ever that I have played more than CONTRA III. I have literally been playing CONTRA III for over 15 years and it never gets old. There are tons of things to say about this game, but I'll keep it short and sweet and just say, "Play it!!"

    1. Modern Warfare series
With all the options and variances of multiplayer alongside the amazing single player there's just too much FPS here for you to contain in one or seventeen thousand hours. I, personally, am a fan of their aiming scheme with the "Down the Sights" style. Not to mention it's the only game where you can crawl slowly around the battlefield making every cm count as you slip behind your opponent and stab them in the back and still be just as effective as the guy running around re-inacting the climax of any Rambo movie. It is a beautiful tribute to what makes First Person Action games so immersive and a must have for whatever console you own.
