Dead Space and Mirror's Edge failed quite simply because gamers aren't will to spend $60 on 12 hour games. They are just not value for money. But no one in the industry or the media want to talk about that and either blame it on piracy for the PC versions and because they were new IP's regarding the console versions. The problem is the media and industry are in their own little world of conventions and trade shows and hotel get togethers. Sessler has no right to garner friends, close friends, in the industry he's reporting on, and reporter of any salt would keep his distance from the industry he reporting on.For example,,. Mr. Sessler, now we now you had long time personal friends at Pandemic, can we still trust any reviews you did of their titles?!The gaming media was more professional in the 90's than it has become in the last 10 years. that does not bode well for the consumer or the industry.
Wait are you saying Dead Space sucks cus if you are in my opinion it is the best game i have ever played.
Um Dead Space wasn't made by Pandemic it was made by Visceral studios which is owned by EA Dead Space is supposed to get a sequal titled Dead Space 2 is supposed to have a 2010 release date.
Mirror's Edge, Dead Space , and Brutal Legend weren't developed by Pandemic. They will all be getting sequels.
Aw man, now I can't get Star Wars Battlefront 3. :( It could have been a very well polished and well thought out game instead of being a rushed mess that Battlefront 2 was.
I would really like to know how much services such as Gamefly help/hurt game sales? With Publishers (especially EA) working with this, "New Purchase Only DLC" as an attempt to break the used sales and renting trends, it's obvious the production side of the industry definitely seems to want slow them down a bit. Don't get me wrong I loved things like Brutal Legend, but honestly, one or two playthroughs is all you need to be done with it. Why would people really when you can rent the game for significantly less money.
You mentioned fluffy bunnies haha, did you mean teady bears?! :P
I do miss 2007, games I got on 07. Bioshock, Halo 3, Assassin's Creed, The orange box, COD 4, Mass Effect (I think it came out in 07) I think those are the only games I got from 07 that I can remember.
i really hope were still going to get a Mirrors Edge Sequel because i really enjoyed that game
i'm sad to see that pandemic is closed down but i have high hopes for The Sabotour that game looks really good love the sin city look to it cool concept fo a fresh look at WW2 hope it turns out to be an amazing game to show that even though pandemic closed they left with one helluva good game
I'm really sad and shocked at Pandemic being closed and even more so that EA has to basically do away with what they did in '08 with putting up and putting a lot of backing to new IPs. EA was by far my favorite company last year but I have a bad feeling that they might turn back to their old ways then we will have them and Activision at the same time.
It will be interesting to see what happens with The Saboteur next month since that is a new IP developed by Pandemic and published by EA. I hope it's good and is well received so that there might be some hope for new and interesting games, but still things are looking bleak.
This is heartbreaking. Think of the people who are losing their jobs with the closing of pandemic, within and outside the studio. My heart goes out to their families in this tough time.
Ultimately, publishers just make me angry. I understand that game development is expensive, and they have the money studios need to put out their games, and they want to ensure they get their money's worth back, but instead of looking at how to get they can help make a game as great as possible, they say "Oh! Let's put DLC out for the launch." Or, "Let's dump millions on an ad compaign for an industry that is mostly word of mouth." It's really one of the big things that keeps me on the PC. No one told Basilisk that Eschalon ( http://basiliskgames.com/escha lon-book-i ) wasn't edgy enough or needed more DLC or even that no one buys these games anymore, and it IS a niche game, but I suppose it did well enough that. Book II will likely be out by February. Thank god they won't have a big Publisher to get in the way.
Full Spectrum Warrior and Mercenaries were well done games and will miss Pandemic. =( I hope EA doesn't give up on FSW, Mercs, or Destroy All Humans.
Pandemic will be missed, it is always sad to see developers go under, their original games like Destroy All Humans and Mercenaries were really fresh titles in a relatively bland gaming world, the gaming industry have lost a truly creative company.
Very sad. With the Pandemic Studios down a lot of great games and the minds behind them are gone... But I fully believe after this recession is over the country and the game industry will be much stronger and more glorious than before. God bless the game industry.
I'm glad this was the Soapbox this week. I really feel like the issues of new IP's and how much they can do for the game industry has been understated. EA was one of the few big companies left still taking those risks, and it really saddens me to see that it did not pan out for them. As they DESERVED it to pan out for them. As great of a game that MW 2 is, the fact that we are in the end helping fund a publisher in Activision that openly admits that to "them" gaming is not about fun, but about making money. I just see dire times ahead honestly. Yeah the gaming industry has been through a lot, but we are going to hit a point due to the economy where all we see at E3's and big gaming conferences is, sequel after sequel after sequel. It may not be a monopoly in terms of one company, but when only one idea seems to be selling, we are really putting the monopoly on what developers are forced to do with there games. Let us just hope and prey that during all this some great new IP comes out and outsells everything, re setting the bar yet again for these fresh new idea and we can then see a slew of them as we are starting to get starved for them.
