o yea Adam, who cares about all those big release games! just talk about what you want to talk about. especially this fun stuff like zombies :)
Im one of those modern people. I wasnt in tht time Adam was describing but ive seen the movies and id have to say modern zombies are better. Yes fast zombies make more sense. The human body is capable of moving at a runny speed so why cant zombies?Three other zombie topics Adam didnt discuss.First, the fact that most zombie related things today start from a different point. Old zombie movies, zombies come out of graves. Heck, I've seen a movie where zombies just walk out the ocean and attack a neighboring town! but anyways most zombies nowadays come from a disease or science-created-vaccine-gone-w rong. i like tht idea more and it also makes more sense.Second, is the fact tht the human body can survive any disease. Im not gonna get all sciencey, but basically the fact tth we all hav unique DNA means there will always be someone with a unique resistance to the zombie disease. For example the movie "I Am Legend" (epic movie BTW go watch it if u like zombies)Third, not only are we creating more realistic zombies, but we are making smarted zombies. When you look at modern zombies you see it makes more sense from thier old counterparts. So when the zombie apocalypse comes its more likely tht these real zombies will be strong. Beware zombies are getting smarter....PS THANK YOU ZOMBIE VIDEO GAMES! THANKS TO YOU I WILL KNOW HOW TO SURVIVE THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE!PSS Im now gonna go find/make a forum thread about surviving the zombie apocalypse.
This is the first time I've heard anyone aside from myself address the psychological terror of the slow moving zombie. For me, I've always viewed the slow moving, zombie as kind of a perfect metaphor for the inevitability of death, they're not fast, they're not smart, and they're not particularly strong, so you can stay alive for a long while, but eventually, there are just so many of them and they'll keep pounding on the door and coming after you so unrelentingly that they're going get you. Just like natural death, you can put it off for a long time, but everyone's time comes eventually.
I like adam sessler man he's awesome.....but all of this speaking of zombies makes me want to pre order good ol L4D2 :) which i may just do because i am a huge zombie fan but i hated L4D i wanted a campaign story but i got 4 different scenarios filled with zombies :/. That's whats making me second guess that purchase all together. People what do u guys think?? L4d2 or leave it in the store on the shelf.
Okay Sessler.... I think you have more pull than me of course... but, PLEASE put this on your show, because I too LOVE ZOMBIES. I'm thinking it would be a fabulous idea if they (Rockstar Games) were to do an actual ZOMBIE game, get this.... Using the Grand Theft Auto IV game, like the previous side stories (ala, The Ballad of Gay Tony and Lost and the Damned) I think it should be your mission to get the word out since I'm not the type people would listen to about such a cool add on to an already existing game. Please make this happen, I'm sure I'm not the only one who's thought about it. Of course the developers would have to make new zombie skins, animations, and maybe alter the world a bit in GTA IV, but ultimately, this would be freakin awesome!
i actually wrote a paper on this exact subject of the importance of zombies in my first year in college. adam, if you want to read it please just let me know.
I just have one simple (sightly off topic) plea (since we're talking zombies): SESSLER, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE QUIT SMOKING! (If you've already quit, ignore this message, would you kindly).Who am I to make such a plea? Well, I'm not a doctor (actually I am, just not that kind of doctor; I'm a poor, lousy English professor who plays video games every waking moment). I'm not a health nut (OK, I did exercise my way from 300 to 180 pounds, quitting smoking to boot). But I AM one thing: A FAN! Call me an internet idjit with nothing better to focus on, but I noticed a few Soapboxes ago, you let out one of those phlegmy smoker's chuckles after a comment, and it struck me (not the phlegm, but how much it would suck if, as a zombie without lungs, you weren't able to dismiss your own erudite comments about video games while I watched). I won't get sentimental or saccharine, but could you just do this one thing for me? Thanks, Sess.
Great Soapbox. Zombies, in my opinion, are quite funny. I have fond memories of playing co-op on Resistance: Fall of Man. We would always go to the levels with lots of Menials (I consider them Zombies) and abuse the poor things.I think that's what I'll be doing when the Zombie Apocalypse comes. Everyone else will be running; I'll be sitting on top of a building, throwing bouncy balls at the darn things.
First off nice work Mr Sessler, good points on the social constraints of fear on a nation state model. However I wish to speak to a somewhat different train of thought. For the iconic age of zombie horror, be it movie's books graphic novels what have you. The creatures themselves were of an unknowing nature, their motives were unknowns there is never any development on the psychological state other then hunger. Moreover what is most apparent is the origin of the zombies, most takes on the genera leave that question blank as to further add to the horror of unknown terror. The ones that do more often then naught refer to a doomsday of sorts, speaking in a biblical terms of the dead rising from the grave and the end of days. And such we have the slow moving and ever present walking dead. The modern interpretations tend to take a different approach speaking in terms of the origin of the creatures. Often turning to a viral or biological outbreak of sorts, be it the T-virus and Las Plagas of Resident Evil, the RAGE virus of 28 Days or most recently in Zombieland Mad Zombie. Now these traits have rather identical characteristics to actual present biological threats to life such as Mad Cow, parasitic organisms, Rabies, Neurotoxins, Neurogenesis, and even somewhat in the realms of science fiction with Nano-bots. Living humans whose minds and bodies have been corrupted in such a manor that any such human being with the chosen type of infection is at will to their more aggressive animalistic sides of their primitive brains. Meaning that these are not so much zombies, but diseased and contagious living human beings. And such we have the enraged fast moving terrors. Now what does all this mean, for the opinion of this insomniac commenter it is the changing shift in what is considered the human condition. For the iconic ages the social understanding of life and what it mean to be human blended to the spiritual and emotional sides of humanity. Look into the mediums, more often then not it is the morally justifiable and virtues that live to see another day, there are exceptions of course but the number of living stack in the socially righteous side. In the modern adaptations of the same genera what it means to be alive and human seems to fall with a biological state of being. Relying on science and logic to guide the moral compass, especially given the increasing amount of gun play and over all almost brutal violence depicted. Over all I think this shift is a small but fair representation of the changing foundation of the definition of the human condition. Now what does this mean in therms of ethics and morality, I haven't a clue. But I will say this in such an event of a "Zombie outbreak", I would recommend setting up shop in the Canadian tundra, acquit food, water and many ways to secure your position and leave room to maneuver out of the are if it were to turn into a kill zone.
Zombies are fun to kill! Next to Nazis of course.
who doesn't love zombies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are one of the best creatures to have fun with!!!!!!!
WOW! That is one awesome trailer! Its as captivating as a movie preview. Rockstar has the best talent in the business, on all levels like programmers, writers, etc etc. No other sandbox I have seen is as realistic as their portrayal of NYC. Also these to DLC's together should pretty much be called a game since each is like 10 hours long. I mean thats longer then most games! I made the mistake of buying ODST which was real fun but way to short, and they charged full price. Whereas Rockstars DLC's are longer then halo 3 and ODST combined! I think its really cool when game companies like Rockstar and naughty dogg just come together as a collection of the best talent from all related disciplines and not only make a fun game with great graphics but redefine gaming.
"How's that for a slice of fried gold?"
that's a neat way of looking at it... i like zombies because you get to kill them without feeling guilty about it.
It is human nature to cooperate with each other when there is a direct threat to your and their life. But, oddly enough after it is over you go back to disliking each other again.People they're a hoot ain't they.
This was a nice soapbox, Adam. I like zombies. They are fun.
