Insignia Blu-ray Player Review

Find out if you should pick up Best Buy's Insignia Blu-ray player, which not only plays your movies at full 1080P but also converts DVDs to high definition (and lots more!) for only $99.

What You Need To Know

  • This is the most affordable Blu-ray player in the market.
  • It features a co-ax and optical audio out.
  • It decodes Dolby Digital and True HD so you get the best possible 5.1 sound out of it.
  • It also has a component and composite video out.
  • You will need to plug in a USB drive for storage to use BD-Live with an ethernet connection.
  • There aren't really any other features.
  • Loading times are very slow, and it takes about 45 seconds to get the FBI copyright warning before even getting to the DVD menu.
  • Quality wise, we noticed more grain and noise in darker scenes.
  • The blacks aren't as deep as they should be.
  • On the plus side, it still looks Blu-ray quality and doesn't lack much in normal light scenes.
  • The DVD upconversion looks just as good as other comparable players.

  • $99.00 which is an amazing deal for a Blu-ray player.
  • It might be worth paying the extra $100 for the true Blu-ray experience.

Note: The Insignia Blu-ray player now retails for $149.99.
