If you're looking to capture the light in the eyes of your giftees, this just may be the way to go with a 2.7" LCD touch screen for navigation and the ability to shoot 1920 x 1080 resolution directly to a memory stick. Scoop it up now for $599 if you've got the bones.

What You Need to Know

  • It only weighs about 1 lb. And fits comfortably in your hand
  • It is a little heavier and wider than the Canon HF10 we loved, but it is not a big deal
  • The touch screen is pretty good too; the icons are the right size, but it might take a few pokes to select what you want
  • Also Sony's menu system requires some drilling down, but overall, it is one of the simplest camcorders we have used
  • As far as features are concerned, face detection finds up to eight faces and adjusts focus, exposure and color to make you look better; it works really well
  • Smile-shutter also snaps a picture anytime you have the camera on, even while you're recording
  • The cam control dial feels just like a manual focus ring and it will also control exposure, white balance, and AE shift
  • Anything with a normal amount of light looks awesome
  • The colors are dynamic, vivid and accurate; they look just like you want HD to look
  • Even in indoor lighting situations, you can make out every detail
  • Low light gets a little too noisy, but not too dark to see your subject; it's sort of a trade-off because some camcorders don't have as much noise but are very dark
  • The only drawback is that it uses Memory Stick Pro Duo exclusively and it only comes with a 4 GB stick which gives you about 25 minutes of HD video
