Canon Rebel XSi

We steam up the lens of the new Canon Rebel XSi and take it out for a spin to see whether or not it's worth us salivating over, in today's Gadget Pr0n.

What You Need to Know

  • It only weighs about 19 ounces without the lens, which is as much as the Nikon D60
  • The grip fits well in your hand but it is still large
  • The huge 3” LCD is a major improvement and they did not have to move too many buttons around
  • The LCD tells you what changes you are making and if you are not able to make a change; this is really helpful on an involved camera like this
  • They have dedicated buttons for frequently used settings like ISO
  • Some options are mode sensitive and this can get confusing; for example, Live View can only be used in manual modes
  • You can also customize your own "My Menu" by adding options you use the most to a quick launch menu
  • Image quality is almost perfect
  • From power up to shooting it's easily the fastest we've tested
  • Continuous shooting is also the fastest in its class at 3.5 frames a second
  • Completely auto settings produce great photos especially in low light
  • The Nikon D60 actually produced sharper images on auto settings than this, but Canon's manual options blow this away; a little tweaking will get you the same quality
  • It is 12.2 megapixels, comes with an 18-55 millimeter image stabilized lens and is worth what you pay

  • $899.99 with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens

Overall Rating

  • 94% (4 Seals of Approval)
