Very important issue about today's society covered in this soapbox. Great job Adam. Maybe people that watch this will change their online gaming habits for the better.

LOL I've tried to post 3 times so far and it keeps saying dont use profanity and there was none.
I don't see why your getting angry.
1.why even make a corellation between stereotyping gamers and this? since stereotyping of gamers happend long before this.
2.Its not about racism or homophobia its all about smack talking and getting angry.
3.such smack talking and anger have existed for a while.
as well why did you single out xbox live? psn, and PC have had voice enabled games and you run into the same problems. -

I play on STEAM (since I have neither console) on games like Day of Defeat Source, Left 4 Dead 1/2, Counter Strike Source, etc. and the sad thing is that I have to DISABLE VOICES in game because of such OFFENSIVE LANGUAGE and MIC SPAMMING. I can throw out my fair share of FRUSTRATED PROFANITY, but its never towards anyone directly and if it is, it is to a friend and is never in the range of the offensive terminology that I constantly hear directed at others by, as stated, kids not even 14 years old. Its just not cool man...just not cool.

At one point i used to be like this ( i dont why, maybe i did it without reliseing) when i relised what i was doing, i was dicusted at myself and now i never do it and end up getting more anoyed at people who do it becuse it reminds of of how imature i used to be.

That was amazing in the least. I'm not one of those people, thank god, although I have thrown a f*g around when I get a little mad. But I don't exactly seem to care about people who do it. The rare accounts I go on one of these offensive rants is when a little kid mouths me like that. I just put him in his place shortly and sweetly. Satisfying for me, and one less of those idiots. I don't know, it's all about how you handle it.

Now Adam... I'm not sure if you knew this... But almost every game on the PS3 and Xbox 360 have a mute button. Derrr!!! Gahd... I dont enjoy listening to 12 year old kids yell racial slurs either, But thats why the mute button was placed there right? RIGHT?! If you dont like it, Mute It! Thats what i do. ALSO you remind me of my old vice principal... I hate him... I dont want to hate you adam... Please dont make me hate you...

Adam I agree with some of it but also agree with the person Infinate Lives. It seems like you're pushing your views. Why do you feel the need to swear? I know it's your first amendment right but why do you do it seeing how you're attached in the public eye in the gaming world. You yourself are making the gaming world look bad at the same time you're trying to clean it up. Have you heard the story about the man who was arrested for using the "F" word while canoeing down a river when a woman and her child were within earshot? So you think it's ok for you to use these words even though someone out there thinks it's ok because they were bleeped out? I used to play Unreal Tournament also and we didn't use headsets then. If you dont like what someone is saying either mute them or take off your headset.
Here's a great example. I'm not a smoker but I enjoy taking my family out to eat. It's not fair that I have to limit where we go because some places allow smoking in certain sections even though it really doesn't matter because you cannot escape it. Unfortunatly if I dont like it then I wont go there period. Same reason I dont go to bars anymore, because I dont like the smell of smoke.
It's not fair that you may have to choose to remove your headset because you're offended but it's well within their rights wether you like it or not. There is no law against being annoying.
It's far to easy to pick apart your rant really. You became a hypocrite near the end when you insulted the people who insult people! Glass houses...Sticks and stones...grow up...ever heard of these?
I applaud your effort but in the end, you sounded like you were starting to pout in a loud voice. -

I watched and agree with many of the points of this video. As a gamer for many years I have used what some would consider to be a homophobic slur "f-g".
My reasoning for using this word is that I see it as being no different than any other curse or swear.
I don't consider it to be homophobic and don't consider it to be associated with gays at all. I agree at one time "f-g" was a slur toward gay people. When I say it or type it I'm not thinking, "There's a g-y person" I'm thinking "*#&^!! you d-bag".
It's the definition we are really wrestling with here. My definition just happens to be different.
"Not all f*gs are g-y and a lot of gays aren't f*gs."
Ideally I'd like all expletives removed from online games. I'm a COD4 player because the dedicated servers allow admins to remove people who get out of hand. Gamers are usually pretty good at self-regulation when given the opportunity. Get banned from enough servers and you'll shape up. But on console games and other games without moderation there are almost no consequences and that is what we need if this is to change. There HAVE to be measurable consequences to the perceived negative actions and those consequences have to severe enough to dissuade gamers from acting in the aforementioned manner. We need more moderation. -

so what about cursing rants that go on for about 30 seconds but with no homophobic or racist remarks. cuz if those are bad too, the im sorry. haha i just enjoy my 4 letter words too much

WOW, I love the Soapboxes and always enjoy them but OMG, I haven't been so locked in to any other rant than this one nor have I seen Adam so aggravated. From start to finish this is one of the best I have seen yet. I totally agree and this is more than an Xbox LIVE epidemic, which is the big problem. Competitive online gaming is out of hand and I can't understand how some of these people function in normal society? Do you flip out on kids at school like this because you are losing at a jeopardy vocabulary game too? I think it is mostly, but not entirely, due to the younger crowd that throw controllers and throw fits and don't know how to behave. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy being a fool at times and giving select admins with woodys a hard time (PC gamer), or harassing random pub teammates that are not on the ball and are ruining a game. But it's all in good fun so, "why so serious?"

That's pretty much the entire reason that I stopped playing online. I hated shooting a guy in the face, or getting shot in the face, and then having craploads of swear word thrown in my face because of it. Grow up, it's just a game, lets move on.

Thank you for bringing this topic up again. It's one of those things that make playing on XBL uncomfortable. I'll start off having a good time and then all of a sudden I'll hear a slur ring out like rusty nails across a chalkboard. I'll swallow hard and try to keep playing, but this person will continue with the slurs until someone gives them some kind of reaction.
I think the people that make these kinds of comments are children looking for attention more often than adults with actual racial or sexual hatred. I think the real racist have better things to do and different avenues that they use to spread their message.
It makes the experience less enjoyable. Trash talking is fine and every once in a while I'll hear a zinger on XBL that will get me killed because I was laughing so hard. Characters are always welcome to any of my matches. However if you want to ruin everyone else's experience because you really want to see how angry black people can get when you use the N word or how many gay people you can offend buy using homophobic slurs realize that you are only embarassing yourself. You embarass yourself more than those who actually hold the hatreds you pretend to espouse. You are a douche at best and a poser at worst desperately crying out for attention while simultaneaously making gaming life uncomfortable for everyone else.
It's not funny. It's not cute. It's just plain sad.
I don't know what can be done about this because so far it seems people have employed racial slurs and homophobic epithtets with impunity since the first Halo but there has to be a limit.
I guess it will come when Sony and Microsoft are finally so embarrassed by what they allow to move through their services. Microsoft, in particular should take note; I spend way too much money a year with subcription fees that they happily collect to feel uncomfortable when I sit down to play. And money coming out of my wallet for bad service, my friends, is a feeling that can truly be likened to hearing rusty nails scratching and old chalk board.
Just one concerned 30 something gamer. -

yeah this is a huge problem. But thank God for xbox live parties. Whenever i get on i always join my friends in a party and just play our separate games so i don't have to hear those little immature kids screaming and cursing.

Adam Sessler, you are my hero. I'm not nearly articulate enough to put it that well so I thank you for voicing a concern I've had for some time now. I don't think the problem is that the people who use these terms are racists or homophobes though. I believe the root problem here is that the racist and homophobic connotations of the words have been lost. People don't even think about the fact that those words were made to denigrate an entire group of people and rather use them as a generic expletive. Unfortunately I don't think your challenge will be taken up by many but here's to hopin'.

i strongly dislike immature kids, who are are spurting racial and other type of slurs, we need people to be more immature

Go Adam!! I know exactly how that feels and it is a problem! I don't enjoy xbox live by myself because people are so obnoxious!
-
Strike_Reyhi
Agreed Sessler. one thing that rears it's ugly head in my xbl parties is people using the word rape, I make a point to always point it out to my friends and remind them it's not something to be used as a substitute for destroying the competition.

I had to scrap my whole comment due to using the words you used in that video. Haha, how's that for hypocrisy. You can use what ever words you want in that video, which the "bleep" only masking the sound of the word. I can't even replace the vowels with asterisks.
My whole point was: These people shouldn't have to censor their vocabulary due to the fact it may offend somebody. Sure, if they're using it to offend, then it will. But, if it's just thrown out as a word to express an emotion, then there is asbolutely no problem there. How dare you call them all ignorant, when you yourself end the video with the word "bastard". Which, where I'm from, describes a child born out of wedlock. Surely, despite it only being used to describe them, the way you used it could be offensive.
Why? Because it's the way it's used. The words you are talking about are merely used to describe a certain type of person. It's as offensive as you want it to be.
I'm not racist, nor am I a homophobe. I completely respect all races, and all ways of life. Of course, some who use the word don't have the same reason as me, but they still have a reason.
You called them what you called them because you don't like how they are, how is that any different to how they feel about those they insult?
Please, explain that one to me.
