Formats pass away and thank goodness they do, because 8-tracks sucked and vinyl record players are hard to carry while you’re jogging, grocery shopping and pumping iron. Digital downloads, together with CDs are where it’s at. However, a growing trend in music retail may change that.
The band, Nine Inch Nails has (like Radiohead before them) just released its latest album directly to the web. Furthermore, CD sales are way down and, as we reported in Friday’s The Loop, iTunes has become the number two retailer of music, taking the place of Best Buy. All of this spells bad news for traditional music distribution and the CD format. Will online music downloads be the death of CDs?
To answer that question, we’ll welcome Columnist and Blogger at Wired, Eliot Van Buskirk and Phil Kay, Vocalist, Keyboardist and Producer from the band, Working For a Nuclear Free City.
