Space Invaders was an arcade game originally released in 1978 by Midway. The goal in the game was to control a laser cannon in order to kill five rows of aliens who all move back and forth across the battle field. The more aliens you killed, the faster the remaining aliens moved.
Space Invaders was one of the world's first shooting games and because of its explosive popularity, it helped revolutionize the gaming industry in ways that people never thought possible. It helped pave the way for shooters to come and even inspired many developers to begin developing games in the first place.
