Metal Gear Solid, the fourth entry in the extremely popular Metal Gear series was released in 1998 to critical acclaim. The game follows Solid Snake, a retired solider who must infiltrate a nuclear weapons facility to eliminate a terrorist threat. Metal Gear Solid was the first game that introduced a new, stealthy style of gameplay.
Instead of blasting through enemies like gamers were accustomed to, in Metal Gear Solid, they had to use mechanics like sneaking, hiding, and crawling to get past the enemy. This innovative style led influenced tons of later games and Solid Snake has gone on to become an iconic video game character.
