The Manliest Getaway

OK, so it's not exactly a vacation, but the "Man Games" is something that any athlete would consider a relaxing day. Did I say relaxing? Sorry, I meant absolutely brutal and awesome. This isn't something that you'd see featured on a TV show like The Getaway, but that doesn't mean it won't help relieve some of that work-day stress. "The Man Games" is a national competition series composed of 12 challenges that will challenge those who call themselves "hardcore." What kind of challenges? Well, how about a 200 yard sprint through an obstacle course compsoed of ice & fire?

Oh, and that's just the warmup. Other challenges include an all-out paintball war, chasing a pig through a knee-deep mud pool, and being launched through the air via a human slingshot. Yes, I said slingshot.  The pricing is relativley cheap and you're guarnteed to at least do something that you've only dreamt of while watching a Die Hard marathon. So return those plane tickets to Paris, sweetheart. It's time to get out there and take a real vacation.

The Perfect Meatloaf Recipe

Do you know what makes meatloaf so unbelievably great? It's so damn easy to cook. Sure, it won't get you onto a show like Knife Fight, but it will leave everyone at the dinner table happy and full. It's so easy that I'm not even going to teach you how to prepare meatloaf. Instead, I'm going to point you to a fantastic recipe from the team at Esquire. The Best Beef Stew Recipe

You haven't lived until you've had a proper beef stew. No, the stews bought at the county fair don't count. We're talking about a proper, slow-cooked beef stew made right at home. What's that? The Great Treehouse Vacation

Every kid has always wanted a treehouse. Unfortunately, not every child has fulfilled the dream of sleeping high above the ground and letting the world pass them by. Well, now you can live out those dreams as an adult at the Out'n'about Treesort. The treetop resort definetly belongs on an episode of the The Getaway, but anyone can enjoy the luxurious treehouses. Situated in Oregon's Siskiyou National Forest,  these treehouses are practically their own apartment and comes with full bathrooms, queen-sized beds, kitchen, and a private deck. Not satisfied with just lounging 75 feet above the forest floor? Don't worry, there's plenty of other activited to be found at the resort, including horseback riding and hiking. Oh, and there's a giant Tarzan swing for all of you daredevils out there. There's just one catch: they only take phone reservations. Here, I'll hand you the cell phone.

The Best Luxury Camping Trip

What do you think of when I say "camping?" The word most likely rekindles throughts of dirty campgrounds, cold nights, and smelly sleeping bags. Well, at least that's what I think of when someone tells me they are going camping. Honestly, the great outdoors aren't for me, but Shelter Co.'s luxury camp service is defintely making me reconsider. One stay with this small company and you'll feel like you're on an episode of The Getaway. How does it work? Well, first you pick any campground in the nation. Shelter Co. will actually travel to any campground you select and bring with them a host of luxury goods. The travel package includes fully furnished canvas tents, communal fire pits, outdoor movie theatres, wine tastings, and boat rentals. You can even rent a fully stocked library if you prefer to kick back and read a few novels on the lakeshore.  Essentially, you're bringing a luxury resort to a campground of your choice. The best part? Shelter Co sets up and breaks down your campground.

The Manliest Sandwich of All Time?

There are a few sandwiches out there that could be rightfully called "manly." The pastrami or brautwurst sandiwich immeditaly comes to mind when talking about truly daunting dishes. But there is one sandwich that has stood the test of time and continues to sit atop the throne. The steak sandiwch is a classic that truly cannot be beat under any circumstance. I don't care if you've cooked the most elaborate sandwich taken straight from an episode of Knife Fight. The steak sandwich trumps all sandwiches. But how do you keep such a classic sandiwch relevant in a world of changing taste and calorie counting? Easy. You keep it exactly the same.

Esquire has a fantastic article on how to construct the perfect steak sandwich. Lets take a look at what you'll need to make this timeless treat:

  • 8-oz prime strip rib-eye steak
  • Coarse salt and ground black pepper
  • Unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup red onion
  • 1/2 cup pickled cherry peppers, sliced
  • 1 cup white mushrooms, sliced thin
  • 2 tbsp steak sauce
  • Soft roll, ends trimmed, split horizontally
  • Garlic mayonnaise
  • 4 slices of Vermont white cheddar cheese
  • Arugula, cleaned and dressed with redwine
  • 2-inch piece fresh horseradish root, peeled

Now get out there and cook.

Step Up Your Grilling Game

So, you had some extra cash and decided to snag a grill. You have dreams of being crowned the barbeque king and ruling the land from your spacula castle atop Rib Mountain. Too bad you have no idea what you're doing. Don't worry, InsideHook has a handy guide that will have you cooking in no time and get you on the road to becoming a Knife Fight chef. But lets not get ahead of ourselves. First, you need a grill to get cooking on. Like a painter's quality canvas, the grill is an essential tool and should not be bought on a bargain price.

The Weber Genesis Series are fanastic grills and won't completly break the bank. This beauty of a grill is encased in stainless steel and features Porcelain-enamled "Flavorizer" bars (I have no idea what that means, but it sounds delicious). But the grill is only half of the adventure. Head over to Inside Hook to get the full rundown. God speed, and good luck.

A Sandwich With Some Bite

Carne Asada is a delicacy that is far to often overlooked (even on the upcoming TV show, Knife Fight). The common dish has been tossed around on nearly every plate, and has become an afterthought in today's world of dainty dishes. Thankfully, The Art of Manliness has a reciepe designed to bring the carne asada back from the brink of blandness. Say "hello" to the Carne Asada Torta, a sandiwch that is anything but boring and tasteless. This immaculate sandwich takes a timeless recipe and slaps it right in between two rolls. The best part? Nearly all of its ingredients can be found at your local store (and it doesn't break the bank). Here's a full rundown of what you'll need:

  • Flank steak
  • Mexican bollilo roll
  • Guacamole
  • Mayonnaise
  • Refried beans
  • Pickled jalapenos
  • Limes
  • Crushed red pepper
  • Garlic powder
  • Black pepper

License to Relax: A James Bond Resort

Did you know that Sir Ian Flemming, creator of the James Bond series, had a villa on the coast of Jamica?  Did you know that you could stay in that villa? While it won't make you 007, it sure will make you feel like the man himself. Trust me, you'll feel like your featured in an episode of The Getaway during your stay. The seculded "GoldenEye" resort is set on a 52 acre plot and contains plenty of luxurious goodies, including a private jungle and beach,  outdoor chaise lounges, on-site spas, and amazing tubs. Spring for a stay in the Flemming Villa and you'll be able to sit at the author's writing desk, where he wrote such classics as "Casino Royale and "Dr No."  The villa also features a personal staff and a seculded garden. Devious and insane villains not included.

The Best Campsite in Northern California

It can be argued that California is the best place to camp in the nation. Consiting of nearly every enviornment you can find on the planet, the great western state has plenty of places to enjoy the wilderness. But there is only one campsite that can truly be called the greatest of them all. That place is named the High Sierra Camp and I wouldn't be surprised if we saw this beauty on the next episode of The Getaway

The luxury wilderness offers a stunning view from 8,000 ft above sea level, and is tucked away in the dense woodlands of the Sequia Forest.  Don't have any camping gear? No problem. The camp is fully equipped with 32 private canvas tents "en suites," hot showers, and a massive Roman-style dining pavillion. Naturally, the resort also offers plenty of outdoor activites, including hiking, horseback riding, fly fishing, and access to the seven Sheep Camp Lakes. You can find more info on this amazing resort right here

How to Throw a Proper BBQ

How to Throw a Proper BBQ

You've planned for this moment for the better part of a month. You've watched at least three episodes of Knife Fight to get your culinary skills up to par, and your grill is polished and ready. The sun rises above the hills and shines down upon your backyard like a divine blessing. The powers that be have declared today the perfect grilling day. There is no better time than now to start up the grill and invite your buddies.  Everything is absolutely perfect, except for one simple thing: you don't know how to host a BBQ.

Don't panic! The fine gentlemen over at Esquire have a handy guide to get you through the process of hosting theperfect summer barbeque.  Here's a quick list of my favorite pieces of advice:

  • Do not walk away from the grill unless it's an absolute emergecy. This is your post and you are bound to guard it for as long as it takes.
  • Plan what you need ahead of time. A BBQ with more than 10 guests  takes at least a week of planning. You don't want to fall back on KFC when you don't have enough food to serve.
  • Make sure you are cooking on a decent grill and not a budget item. Don't bother cooking anything if you're going to use the grill that's been collecting dust for centuries in your garage.

The Best Cruise Money Can Buy

Face it, the traditional cruise is a boring affair. You wake up in the morning and do the same things you would do if you were back at home: eat, drink at an overpriced club, and sleep. Why would you pay more than $1,000 for a trtip that is essentially a stay-at-home vacation? Cue the Alila Purnama, a gorgeous yacht that you can embark on for a fairly competitve price. This beautiful ship could easily be featured on a TV show like The Getaway. The three-deck schooner was built entirely by hand and comes with all the essentials you would expect out of a large cruise liner.

The Purnama's accomadations begin with five queen bed cabins, an on-board spa therapist, and a master suite balcony with a beautiful veranda. The ship also contains a classic and well-stocked library for those times you want to just sit down and relax.  The yacht also takes guests on local adventures, including kayaking, suba diving, and hiking through Indonesian rainforest villages. Check out the full info here.

The Best Summer Brew

The Best Summer Brew

There is no better time to drink beer than the summer. Sure, you can enjoy a sip any time burning the year, but it tastes the best when consumed under the hot sun. It's also the best companion when cooking a meal for a few of your friend (as evidenced on the Knife Fight TV show).  But what is the best beer to have on those hot days and coo summer nights? Thankfully,  Esquire has a handy list with a few chioce IPAs and mass-produced ales, including some beers that you've probably never heard of before.

Personally, my favorite on the list is the Anchor California Lager. I'm not much of a "Lager guy," but this smooth drink doesn't leave the heavy after taste that I usually try to avoid. Can't get the California Lager in your area? My second choice would be the Firestone Walker Pils. The drink contains a juicy falvor with a snap of German hops thrown in for good measure. Check out the full list here.
