How To Play Shibuya for iPhone »

There’s no shortage of colored block puzzle games on the iPhone, but Shibuya stands out from its brethren. Whereas most color-matching puzzlers are defined by their intuitive “pick up and play” nature, Shibuya goes for a unique gameplay system that will have you spending a good amount of time practicing the basics.

The PAX 10: Puzzle Bots

The great thing about the PAX 10 is not only being able to meet people who are passionate about making games, but are equally as passionate about the games themselves. Take for example Erin Robinson, the designer of Puzzle Bots. This point-and-click adventure game takes you on the journey of five tiny robots as they traverse the often-treacherous robotic labs. The twist here is that while you are raising sunken toy ships or trying to escape from flooded tubes, there’s a bigger story involving the inventors outside of these puzzles.

Small tasks lead to big results as the group argues, works out a twisted love triangle, and tries to solve a mystery. This all culminates in a rather light-hearted story that fits the rich environments and clever puzzles.

Firefall Cinematic Trailer »

Firefall might just be the best-looking game that you've never heard of. Well, the main reason you haven't is because that it was just announced at PAX, so I'll take that into consideration and give you a break. This game was announced at PAX, and it seriously managed to impress. Both because of its looks, the gameplay, and the fact that it's going to be free. Yes, free.

You'll need to save your money for the "optional enhancements" to the game, which we hope don't become "necessary requirements."

"Firefall paints a beautifully devastating vision of Earth, 200 years in the future. The promise of a new clean energy source, Crystite, leads to the disastrous arrival of the Melding, a hostile energy storm that engulfs most of our home planet. Earth’s surviving humans must band together in the eye of the Melding storm to save our species. Unfortunately, a new danger emerges as a bloodthirsty race known as The Chosen threatens humanity’s survival."

Plane Weaver

I can hardly get my friends to agree on what to put on a pizza let alone create a game in the span of a month. Plane Weaver is a rather clever student project that comes to us from Denmark. In this platform-puzzlier, you must save your brother’s soul from a giant machine bent on taking over the world.

PAX 2010 Preview: Slam Bolt Scrappers

Downloadable PS3 game Slam Bolt Scrappers from Fire Hose games mashes together seemingly incompatible elements to create a frenzied, fun combat/building game -- Imagine mixing Tetris with Super Smash Bros and adding a dose of tower defense, and you have some idea of how Slam Bolt Scrappers works.

The PAX 10: Retro City Rampage

Remember the name Brian Provinciano. Why? Because he's been laboring for years working on Retro City Rampage. You might not have heard of this game yet, but you're going to. It'll be coming to the Wii and "other platforms" sometime later, and when it does, you're in for a treat. Somehow Brian has figured out a way to plug an 8-bit stream directly into the gaming / pop-culture center of your brain, and turn it into this magical video game.

PAX 2010 Preview: Jam City Rollergirls

The last time I traveled to Jam City, I made a left on Peanut Butter Lane and ended up in the land of Sandwich Deliciousness! But that was just a wonderful, wonderful dream. In real life, I played the upcoming WiiWare title Jam City Rollergirls at PAX 2010 and was impressed with the racing game's lighthearted style and fast-paced, Mario Kart-like action.

The game allows you to play as different real-life roller derby crews from all over the country (Although hometown favorites the L.A. Derby Dolls are not included) and mix it up with other roller skating chicks in a battle to the death...or to the highest point total. There is a single-player mode and dual-player mode, but the split-screen multiplayer is the way to go, so that's what I played.

The PAX 10: Fowl Space

Fowl Space was a lovechild of boredom. While in class, two of the developers started passing designs back and forth. Somewhere in the middle of all that ink and crumpled paper, a chicken in a space helmet was born and thus we have Fowl Space. The story follows a chicken that wants to destroy the sun only to find it inhabited by lingerie-loving Vikings – and then things get crazy. This rather easy to control platform-shooter is filled to the brim with style, off-colored humor, and frantic action.

The PAX 10: Hegemony: Philip of Macedon

Developing a real-time strategy game is challenging enough when you've got money and a publisher behind your efforts, because even then you have to contend with the tried and true big boy franchises, like Starcraft, Civilization, Age of Empires, and the like. All of which just had or are about to have new releases. So how do you do it when you're an indie developer?

If you're anything like Longbow Games, you just put your head down and churn out your own product. Hegemony: Philip of Macedon is what came out of their efforts, and when I first walked by their booth I did a double take, thinking that no indie game developer could produce an RTS title that looked this polished.

PAX 10: Altitude

Not every indie game seeks to reinvent the wheel. Some of them are still out there to prove that games are all about fun. They don't have to be filled with innovation or present something that nobody has thought about before. If there wasn't at least some form of imitation in many games, then we would have a very slim selection of games to choose from.

Altitude is all about that. It's a very simple 2D flying platformer that has the added bonus of perk, rewards, and a leveling up system. You can progress from Airman all the way to General as you pilot your way through simple game modes like Team Base Destruction, Ball, Team Death Match, Free For All, with a variety of one life left alternates.

SEGA Reveals First Official Details For The Conduit 2

I went to Pax 2010 and I played Wii shooter The Conduit 2, and you know what? It was pretty awesome. Yeah, I know, "Wii shooter" is almost an oxymoron at this point, but don't be snobby and give this one a try, won't you? I have a feeling it's going to be more than worth your time.

Here's part of my preview:

"Trying to make a Wii equivalent to a hardcore shooter is a pretty high bar to clear, so The Conduit's problems can be forgiven. It wasn't a perfect game, but it was a promising game, an ambitious game. In other words: Ripe for a sequel.  Although it's hard to tell definitively from the pre-Alpha level playthrough and boss battle I enjoyed at Pax 2010, Sega seems aware of the problems that plagued the first game, and is taking steps to correct them, while leaving in the things gamers liked about the first go-round."

Here's the rest of my Conduit 2 preview.

The PAX 10: Bastion

You wake up on an island suspended in the void. There's been a calamity and you need to figure out how to put the world back together. Moving around causes items, steps, pieces of the environment, and even the very ground you tread on to spring out of the void. Welcome to BastionSupergiant Game's first title.

Lending to the game’s unique style, Greg Kasavin, the team’s creative director, explained that it was part of their 'fog of war.' By never seeing what's around the corner until you turn it, players must always keep alert for unseen foes or new areas to explore. He also mentioned that the unique style gave the team room to play around with the concept in different ways during later levels.
