Nintendo has announced they have sold more than 19 million Nintendo 3DS consoles worldwide as of the end of June 2012. The video game giant also revealed that since the manufacturing costs for the 3DS have finally gone down, they're no longer incurring a loss from each unit sold.

In the wake of losing almost a billion dollars last year, this must be welcome news for Nintendo, whose hopes for the future are looking up. The company is launching the super-sized Nintendo 3DS XL on August 19, the same day that New Super Mario Bros. 2 will be released both as retail and digital versions, a first for Nintendo.

Kingdom Hearts 3D Battle Shots
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance marks the return of the KH series. As the first title in the series exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS, gamers can expect plenty of 3D gameplay mechanics. Kingdom Hearts 3D was reviewed by our very own Leah Jackson. Find out why you'll be heading to the local game store on July 31, 2012 in her review.

"As I lay my Keyblade down to rest, I think it’s safe to say that Square Enix and Disney have outdone themselves with Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. The seventh installment in the Kingdom Hearts series follows the events of Kingdom Hearts: Re:coded, wherein the heroic Sora (how has he managed to stay so freaking cute this long?) and his best friend, the stoic Riku, defeated Ansem and Xemnas, reviving the malicious Xehanort. It’s always one thing after another with Organization XIII, isn’t it?

New Super Mario Bros. 2 3DS Game Set For Summer 2012

We finally get our greedy little hands on the 3DS game that will have you chasing after that gold stuff, New Super Mario Bros. 2. As a direct sequel, expect to find much of the same great platforming and style that made the first one so popular. But of course, the team over at Nintendo added a couple of new twists to the formula to keep you on your toes.

One of the new aspects that we got to try out was the Coin Rush mode:

“You can access Coin Rush levels after you’ve completed them on regular difficulty, and these levels just throws countless coins from every conceivable place. Coins pour down pipes. They follow jumping turtles. You can use gold flowers to turn blocks into coins. You can get a mask that makes Mario leave a trail of gold coins behind him. Coin Rush gives you one life to play three levels, and collect as many coins as possible.”

To find out more about our time with the plumber, check out the rest of our Hands-On Preview of New Super Mario Bros. 2.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 looks better and better with every trailer we see of the game. In the latest video, you can check out a bunch of brand new abilities Mario will be getting in his upcoming adventure, including ones that let him walk on water and destroy flaming lava rocks. Personally, I hate water levels in Mario/all games, so that power-up seems extra awesome to me.

Nintendo 3DS XL Announced, Launching This Summer

Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata confirms that the upcoming 3DS XL will support dual analog control games with a freshly super-sized version of the Circle Pad Pro (via Kotaku). There's no price or release date yet, but with dual analog-supporting 3DS games already out in the wild, one would hope that the updated peripheral will arrive on or around the 3DS XL's August 19, 2012 release.

The 3DS XL was only recently announced, offering gamers an improved battery life and a larger pair of screens to play on. We've yet to see the thing in action yet, but the 3DS is a capable little device and it's reasonable to expect that the 3DS XL will be a capable bigger device. You can get one for yourself on August 19 for $199.

The Nintendo 3DS XL is Nintendo's super-sized version of the original Nintendo 3DS handheld. The new device will sport two screens, both larger than the original 3DS', as well as a better battery and it will come with a 4GB SD card.

Nintendo's released a short video showing off the size of the XL compared to the original 3DS so you can see just how big it really is.

Nintendo 3DS vs Nintendo 3DS XL Comparison Trailer »

The Nintendo 3DS XL will retail for $199 in North America on August 19, 2012, the same day as  New Super Mario Bros. 2 releases.

Are you going to be picking either one up?
