Nintendo 3DS

Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D has a new trailer featuring Resident Evil veterans, Jill Valentine and Albert Wesker. The 3DS is capable of showing graphics more powerful than past Nintendo handhelds, and that's obvious in this trailer. Both Jill and  Albert show off their sharpshooting skills. Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D is a Nintendo 3DS exclusive set to be released later this year.

Rumor: Upcoming Nintendo 3DS Titles Get Release Dates

First party Nintendo titles like Ocarina of Time and Kid Icarus were sorely missing from the Nintendo 3DS launch this Sunday, but a tip from a distributor that deals directly with Nintendo of Spain may have confirmed that the titles aren't too far off. Keep in mind that retail lists like this are usually just placeholders and we're not holding our breath that huge moneymakers like Starfox 64 and Kid Icarus will be released on the same day. This is Nintendo we're talking about.

Here's are the upcoming titles and their "release dates".

  • RABBIDS 3D, April 1st
  • STARFOX 64, May 6th
  • SPORTS ISLAND, June 3rd
  • NARUTO SHIPPUDEN 3D, June 17th

With the launch of the Nintendo 3DS following the launches of both the Kinect and Playstation Move, there seems to be an influx of new gaming technology. While sales of these new pieces of hardware seem successful, the question is do they enhance our gaming experience? In this week's Soapbox, Adam expresses his confusion over these new gadgets and his fears that the gaming industry is putting technology before creativity.

The Nintendo 3DS has been out for a few days now, it's broken sales records, and overall people seem to really be enjoying their new system in all sorts of ways. One such way is with a microwave. Please note that while interesting, we do not approve microwaving your new 3DS system.

If you're wondering what happened to the Nintendo 3DS after it was plunged to its sweltering demise, the microwave operator has turned it into a slug and is offering it on Ebay for $999. What?

Nintendo Reveals 3DS First Look Titles

The Nintendo 3DS has been taken apart by a research firm that confirmed the materials used to make the 3DS cost $100.71. Manufacturing the 3DS adds another $2.54 bringing the total to $103.25. Unsurprisingly, much of that cost goes to making the 3DS 3D: "at $33.80, the main 3-D as well as the secondary display—also from Sharp—together with the touch screen, represent the most expensive group of component costs in the 3DS, accounting for roughly 34 percent of the total cost of materials." The 3DS retails for $250.

E3 2010: Ridge Racer 3DS Screenshots

The Nintendo 3DS has been out since Sunday in the US, and first-day sales are looking very good for Nintendo. According to the company, "US day-one sales numbers for Nintendo 3DS were the highest of any Nintendo handheld system in our history."

While no specific figures were given, this statement means the 3DS outsold the original DS, the DS Lite and the DSi, which is pretty amazing, given the amount of hype and interest there was in those systems.

Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D, the upcoming RE game for the Nintendo 3DS, will ship with a demo for Resident Evil: Revelations. RE: Revelations demo will let players control Jill Valentine as she explores an ocean liner with a serious infestation of creepy creatures. We don't know much about Revelations other than its a brand new title for the 3DS. Capcom announced they will reveal more details about RE: Revelations at this year's E3.

Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D is set to be released this summer for the 3DS.

Nintendo Responds To Error Reports, Headache Complaints

The day after the launch of any system is usually marked by complaints -- things just don't work out quite as advertised in the real world. The Nintendo DS is no exception. So far, there have been two major complaints about the system: A widely seen error and headaches.

As we reported earlier today, some corners of the internet are abuzz with reports of freezes of the system, dubbed the Black Screen of Death. According to a statement just issued by Nintendo, there is a simple, time-tested solution to the problem: Make sure your software is up-to-date.

"If anyone is experiencing any problems with their Nintendo 3DS console, we recommend that in the first instance they download and install the latest system update, now available online... If the problems still persist we recommend they contact their local Nintendo Customer Service center to investigate the problem further."

The second problem, headaches, is a bit trickier to solve.

Sexy Nintendo 3DS Pictures: You Knew It Had To Happen

Well, that was fast. The first ever 3D sexy pictures have become available for the Nintendo 3DS! These are not an official Nintendo release, of course, but instead are the product of Japanese photographer/artsy-gamer-girl Julie Watai.

It works like this: You go to Watai's site, and download the file there. Then, you unzip it, put it on an SD card, put the SD card into your 3DS and enjoy fine, fine 3D sexiness. Judging from the samples on Watai's website, the pictures aren't incredibly lewd or nude, more cutesy than anything else.

So what do you think? Are you goign to be downloading this stuff?

Gamers lined up outside Best Buy in New York City's Union Square last night to be the first in the country to get their hands on the new Nintendo 3DS handheld, which promises to bring glasses-free 3D gaming to the masses. The unseasonably cold weather saw everyone arriving bundled in winter gear, but the plummeting temperature did nothing to chill the spirits of gathered fans.

The turnout was small, no more than a few hundred people, but it was an enthusiastic bunch. Instead of waiting in a traditional line, fans were allowed to mill about in a fenced-off area that was highlighted by several 3DS demo stations and a taco truck. In a classy added touch, Nintendo had people walking around handing out free hot dogs and bottles of water to the gathered attendees.

That said, it was hard to avoid noticing that the crowd was a light one overall. While fans lined up along 4th Ave just south of 14th St, another area to house additional buyers had been erected around the corner, complete with 3DS demo stations and a serve-yourself hot dog-and-water buffet station. But wait... there's more!

What Is It?

The Nintendo 3DS is the newest iteration of Nintendo's handheld console, the Nintendo DS. Arguably only a little less powerful than the Wii when it comes to graphical horsepower, the 3DS boasts 3D graphics without the need for any stupid glasses. The console was first announced at E3 2010 during the Nintendo Press Conference when women with the device strapped to their belts wandered through the audience. While the pretty ladies were nice, the real star of the show was the 3DS, wowing the gaming press with its glasses-less 3D and powerful graphics.

Steel Diver

During the Korean war, I was a submarine captain, so I think I know a little bit about submarine video games. That's why I was chosen to play Nintendo 3DS title Steel Diver, a sub simulator that takes place in three dimensions!

Sadly, it's not very good. From my review:

"Like many launch titles released with new game systems, Steel Diver is more like a fattened-up tech demo for the 3DS than a full game. As a demonstration of what your new Nintendo handheld can do, it’s neat. As a full gaming experience, Steel Diver is thin, showing tantalizing possibility but ultimately not delivering enough"

E3 2010: Nintendo 3DS Images

The Nintendo 3DS is region locked. Back in January we told you about a rumor the 3DS would have region codes. A Nintendo support staff member sent out this email, “There are no Region codes in DS and DS Lite, but DSi, DSi [XL], and 3DS have region codes. The region codes are installed in each game and the 3DS itself. … You can’t play if the region codes are different." Nintendo never officially commented on the rumor but now that the 3DS is on American soil gamers are confirming their imported games don't work. In fact, the 3DS doesn't even acknowledge the software.
